Under the direction of the surgeon, assists in performing safe operations with optimal outcomes for the patient.

Essential Function/Duties:
Collaborates with surgeon and health care team in performing safe operations. Assesses the patient pre-operatively and develops a nursing care plan based on the assessment. Practices in collaboration with and under the direction of the surgeon during the intra-operative phase. Assists in positioning skin preparation and draping of the patient. Provides homeostasis, wound exposure, handles tissues appropriately to reduce the potential for injury, sutures tissue, and applies dressings to the wound under the direction of the surgeon. Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose. Evaluates the patient post-operatively and participates in discharge planning. Communicates information to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Performs other duties in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Alaska.

Skill in peri-operative nursing practice. Ability to apply principles of asepsis and infection control. Knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, patho-physiology, and operative technique related to operative procedures in which the RN assists. Ability to perform effectively in stressful and emergency situations. Ability to perform effectively as a member of the operative team. Abilities in the areas unique to the RN First Assistant. Knowledge of statutes, regulations and institutional processes as related to the RN First Assistant position. Strong problem solving skills.
Education: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program. Successful completion of First Assistant educational program and required internship.
Experience: Five (5) years OR experience including two (2) years scrub experience and open heart experience. Minimum 2 years RNFA experience recommended.
Licensure: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse with the Alaska State Board of Nursing. BLS, ACLS, PALS-AHA certifications required.
