Job Description : DENR Fisheries Technician III

This is a senior technician position within the Native Village of Eyak’s Department of the
Environment and Natural Resources working in established programs both in the field and office.
This position supports Biologists in successfully conducting research in fisheries and wildlife,
and may also be utilized in environmental programs. Supervision of subordinate technicians will
be required, as will regular travel, and frequent fieldwork in remote areas.

This position exercises wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical
assignments
Team: DENR Salary range: $20.00-$25.00 per hour
Reports to: Natural Resources Coordinator Schedule: Permanent Seasonal, Full Time
Salary Status: Non-Exempt from Overtime
Responsibilities/Duties:
Support project managers in successfully completing research projects.
Supervise subordinate technicians in the office and at field sites.
Collect reliable and accurate data.
Assist with data Quality Assurance/Quality Control and report writing as needed.
Assist with Tribal Youth Education and Tribal Elder site visits.
Assist with the hiring and training of seasonal technicians.
Logistical support including, but not limited to, helicopter sling loading, ordering/purchasing
gear and supplies, delivering supplies to remote sites, assessing and reporting on field
conditions, determining points of access/egress to remote sites, conducting safety briefings,
camp mobilization/ demobilization.
Safely navigate vessels on the Copper River from camp to sampling sites daily.
Other duties as developed and assigned.
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Must have the ability to supervise a diverse crew in a stressful environment. Ability to live and

work harmoniously in a tobacco/drug/alcohol-free environment for extended periods of

time. Prior knowledge and skills to assess field conditions preferred. Must have ability to work

well in a remote environment with minimal privacy and limited communication resources.

Working knowledge of basic scientific methods and techniques for biological research and
analysis; Strong research, writing and verbal communication skills, including experience with
data Quality Assurance/Quality Control, scientific report writing, and public speaking; Strong
computer literacy, including working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and
Access, GIS, internet browsing and email applications; Physical ability to work long hours
outdoors, with strength and endurance to lift and carry very heavy objects; Strong leadership

skills and ability to maintain team morale under difficult circumstances; Ability to operate a
variety of types boats in both river and ocean settings with a high level of competence. Ability
to trailer, launch and recover boats from 14’-30’ solo. Ability to operate boats single-handed,
and fully laden with personnel, gear, and/or equipment; Ability to maintain engines, boats, tools
and equipment.
Experience
Required
Minimum three years experience working in the biological sciences with at least one year
experience as DENR Technician II with NVE. Minimum 3 months experience working at remote
research sites.
Preferred
Experience with project management, field research, sampling and data collection, and public
awareness education; Experience building, maintaining and operating fishwheels, safely
capturing and handling large adult fish, PIT tagging, collecting biometric data and collecting
specimens; Professional experience working in remote locations in the Alaskan outdoors;
Experience working with Alaskan Tribes, and knowledge of subsistence resource issues; Expert
level proficiency in carrying firearms as a bear deterrent; Minumim 6 months experience
working at remote research sites.
Education
Required minimum
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biology, fisheries
biology or related field; Relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.
Performance Standard
Physical ability to work long hours outdoors, with strength and endurance to continually

lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs, and occasionally heavier. The position requires that

applicants are in sufficient condition to perform physically demanding tasks. The use of hand,
eye and muscle coordination to safely operate boats, power tools (adult applicants only) and
hand tools is required.
Environmental Factors
Majority of work will be completed out of doors. The position requires a considerable amount of
physical activity while conducting fieldwork, including hiking and climbing over difficult
terrain. Employee will be required to stay for extended periods of time in remote camps (up to 4
months). Work will include exposure to severe weather (heat, cold and wet), hazards associated
with power tools, hazards associated with traps to collect fish, and working in areas containing
large predators (including, but not limited to, bears and wolves). Work will be conducted in
remote settings, often on dangerous rivers, marine habitats, rainforests, snowpack, frozen rivers
and lakes, wetlands, and in office settings.
