Job Description : The Legislative Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Legislative Assistant in the office of Councilmember Alex Pedersen, District 4. This challenging fast-paced environment has a focus on fostering greater accountability from city government and making District 4 and Seattle a better place for everyone in an equitable, responsive, effective, fiscally responsible, and ethical manner. The Legislative Department works collaboratively to realize the City’s vision of racial equity and social justice.

Councilmember Pedersen is seeking to hire a full-time Legislative Assistant to work on policy review/development, project completion, emerging issue research, and community engagement including communications with constituents. This is a collaborative environment where the Legislative Assistant will work directly with the Councilmember to advance the goals of the office.

The office is comprised of approximately four staff members with this position reporting directly to the Councilmember. The individual in this role must be punctual and able to work Monday through Friday, in addition to some weekends and weeknights as public meetings and other obligations or deadlines require. This at-will appointment serves at the discretion of the Councilmember.

Job Responsibilities:
Policy Projects and Communication as assigned by the Councilmember

Research, analyze, break down, complex issues and data into clear bullet points and spreadsheets, communicate policy analysis, and provide actionable recommendations to Councilmember, team members, committees, and other council offices as directed.
Policy matters may include, but are not limited to, the following areas: affordable housing, economic development, homelessness reduction, management-labor negotiation/regulation, technology, and other local government areas as assigned by Councilmember.
Draft and prepare speeches, talking points, correspondence, public notices, briefings, memos, actionable proposals, analytical spreadsheets, and other materials (i.e., the District 4 newsletter, media releases, PowerPoint presentations, social media posts, and reports).
Manage special projects and provide written and mathematical analysis and actionable recommendations to the Councilmember based on findings.
Compile, organize, analyze/interpret data to be presented in user- friendly reports, tables, and/or graphs.
Proactively identify emerging issues and stay informed on local news, policy issues, and legislation proposed by or considered by the Council, in the City, and by other jurisdictions; serve as subject matter expert to the Councilmember and provide information on policy priorities and initiatives (emphasis on city and regional issues).
Internal Administration

Share the internal administration of tasks with fellow Legislative Assistants that support the Councilmember as follows:

Represent the Councilmember in the District and with the Legislative Department.
Coordinate and staff committee meetings, tours, and site visits as needed. Participate in meetings with staff and the Councilmember.
Provide professional, service-oriented connections with members of the public, Councilmembers, and City Departments (NOTE: the commitment to public service extends beyond the normal workday; staff actions reflect on the office of the elected official).
Assist with routine office administration to include:
screening and responding to Councilmember’s mail,
helping callers,
fielding requests for meetings
acting as the liaison between constituents, government agencies, or other organizations to respond/resolve issues.
following up as needed for successful resolution.
Monitor compliance with ethics and elections procedures, the Seattle City Charter, and public records disclosure rules (i.e., usage of personal devices could be subject to public disclosure).
Assist with scheduling and preparing Councilmember in advance of items on his calendar.
Support the team as needed during periods of short staffing.
Share supervision of work-study intern(s).
Community Outreach

May develop, organize, and implement community outreach and engagement strategies with the Councilmember for District 4 and other impacted areas of Seattle, to include:

Identifying and communicating with key stakeholders,
Speaking to local groups,
Planning/attending events and meetings,
Establishing and maintaining relationships with the community, and
Advising/making actionable recommendations to the Councilmember on complex community issues.

Other relevant duties as assigned by Councilmember.

Qualifications:
A combination of education, training, and experience may be accepted for the following minimum qualifications:

2+ years of professional experience in public service or in a political environment working on public policy development, creating legislation, economic/financial research/analysis, community organizing, urban planning, public relations, or a directly related field
Bachelor’s degree in political science, public administration, business, or a related field
YOU MAY BE EVEN MORE PREPARED FOR THIS ROLE IF YOU:

Have a Master’s degree in public administration or business administration, or are enrolled in a graduate program working toward that degree.
Have knowledge of Seattle’s District 4, an awareness of issues pertaining to other City districts and outlook that aligns politically with the Councilmember’s.
The successful candidate will also have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

Experience working in a fast-paced office environment demonstrating the ability to adapt and thrive with rapidly changing directions.
Proficient in using MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
Can set priorities, meet deadlines, anticipate problems, devise solutions, and accomplish objectives with minimal supervision or oversight.
Maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion, and remain calm under pressure.

Additional Information:
WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position will primarily be onsite at the Seattle City Hall: 600 Fourth Ave. 3rd Floor, Seattle, WA. Alternative Work Arrangements may be considered and will be based on operational needs.
