Job Description : Overview:

This position is a critical member of the HSSE Team. The primary focus of this position is to provide CDL driver training and regulatory compliance. The position provides support to Alaska West Express, Inc. through the professional execution of driver training and evaluations, health, safety, security, and environmental projects and tasks, industrial hygiene evaluations, emergency response, data management, and equipment inspections and maintenance. The position is a key instructor for the Lynden Training Center, which serves internal and external customers.
Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Attendance and timliness are essential functions of this position.
Conduct employee and customer facing training in a classroom setting, one-on-one, and hands-on settings.
Present information using a variety of instructional techniques or formats, i.e., role-playing, simulations, team exercises, group discussions, and videos.
Conduct on-road tests and other evaluations with drivers to determine if the driver meets Alaska West Express skills standards and are in compliance with safety, regulatory, and company procedures and policies.
Provides new employee orientation, driver training, forklift/loader training, Zero Defect Delivery (ZDD), chemical delivery/transfer training, and other training as required.
Coach/Counsel drivers in collaboration with Operations and Safety for violations of DOT Regulations, FMCSR, safety standards, and company policies.
Compliance system owner of the driver training initiative to include:
Developing and maintaining training materials,
Delivering timely and relevant training,
Assisting the organization with continual improvement of programs / delivery / presentation,
Work with all AWE sites regarding their driver training and other Lynden Companies as requested,
Coordinate with other Lynden driver trainers,
Manage the existing driver refresher training program and delivery,
Model safe behaviors and professional interactions.
Participate in and facilitates incident investigations to include: environmental, transportation and occupational related incidents and near misses.
Support the Lynden Training Center by delivering and providing:
49CFR Hazardous Materials Transportation, equipment operations, and emergency response training,
Consulting services to other Lynden Companies and outside organizations,
Course development and updating,
Other tasks as required.
Participate in the AWE HSSE Observation Program.
Perform facility inspections that focus on regulatory compliance. Inspections may include transportation, environmental, and safety compliance.
Provide corporate-wide assistance concerning HSSE integration, auditing, and compliance.
Participate as an active member of the Alaska West Express Emergency Response Team (ERT). Roles can include on-scene safety, operations section chief, entry team leader/member, confined space rescue technician, and other duties as assigned.
Evaluate and enforce AWE’s HSSE program and policies.
Maintains Route Plans and Journey Management Plans in accordance with internal procedures and customer requirements.
Support AWE Operations with researching regulatory requirements.
Adhere to the safety policy of AWE and complies with the standards set forth by regulatory agencies, state, and local laws.
Maintain Class A CDL with HazMat driver status with the Company.
Qualifications:

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

The successful applicant must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Class A CDL with hazmat and tanker endorsement and a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 2 years’ experience driving with a Class A CDL, HazMat endorsement, and long combinations.
High school diploma or GED
Prefer candidates who have:
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in adult training delivery.
CDL driver training experience.
Fire Service Instructor, Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) or higher, industrial safety, and emergency response experience.
Must have the ability to work independently and handle a variety of tasks at one time. The applicant must have strong communication and organizational skills.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with co-workers, supervisors and managers, to understand procedures and warning signs and or markings in the English language, to respond to inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Demonstrated experience in handling emergency situations is preferred.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work independently, handle a variety of tasks at one time.
Ability to train, coach, and evaluate knowledge and skills.
Ability to work alone and as part of a team under pressure of deadlines.
Must pay close attention to all details, have the ability to identify and correct errors.
Ability to implement student facing training programs as required.
Ability to learn and use technology as needed; examples include, but are not limited to, ELDs, satellite tracking units, simulators, learning management tools, standard office software (Microsoft Office, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.), telephones, and classroom equipment.
Strong presentation and classroom instruction and facilitation skills.
Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner.
Ability to maintain an appropriate professional presence.
Knowledge of federal and state traffic laws preferred.
Ability to travel up to 30%; overnight travel may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus while entering data, walking through facilities, answering phones and monitoring office environment.
This position does require working at heights and the use of Level A/B/C HazMat response PPE, firefighting bunker gear with SCBA, technical rescue personal equipment, and within confined spaces.

This job operates 40% of the time in a normal professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets; this job operates 60% of the time in a Class 8 tractor, with or without a trailer ranging from 28 to 53 feet in length.
The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
Tasks will include working outdoors for extended periods of time throughout Alaska during all times of the year, working at heights, and within confined spaces.
Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to perform each of the following physical requirements:

Walk up to 150 feet several times during the workday
Make quick, rational decisions and have full and constant use of arms, hands, legs and feet while performing driving tasks such as turning, slowing, braking, and passing, backing and parking the vehicle
Stand and completely balance on full body weight while entering and exiting the tractor/trailer
Reach all vehicle controls for operation and all equipment for pre-trip inspections, including overhead reach (up to 70”) and reach across midline
The ability to handle and finger all vehicle controls for operation and all equipment for pre-trip inspections, maintain a constant and firm grip, and perform frequent fine hand manipulation
