Who we are:
The Environmental Program Technician (EPT) provides paraprofessional technical and administrative support for five professional staff and four engineering staff in the Division of Environmental Health’s Drinking Water Program. This includes detailed review of a large volume of water quality analytical data using an electronic data management system and incorporates data entry and compliance tracking for multiple projects and cases. The EPT receives, does completeness reviews, and tracks engineering plan submittals; creates invoices and processes payments; and provides technical and compliance assistance to owners and operators of small public water systems.

The Drinking Water Program’s mission is to protect public health by ensuring that all people have access to safe drinking water. We work with public water systems (PWS) to help them remain in compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations to prevent waterborne disease outbreaks and exposure to other drinking water contaminants. This position serves a key role in providing technical support for both compliance and engineering staff, as well as compliance assistance and enforcement to PWS in the northern half of Alaska.

Your working environment:
The job is based in the Fairbanks Department of Environmental Conservation building, on the west side of Fairbanks. Most of the work is done in the office or from home with some field work in the summer, and some travel throughout the year as applicable for training. There is a lot of independence in organizing the day-to-day work responsibilities and in determining the best way to meet the goals for each project.

Minimum Qualifications
One year of advanced clerical experience in a resource management or resource development organization; environmental oversight or evaluation organization; or organization responsible for the transport or storage of hazardous materials where the clerical duties included identifying environmental requirements and explaining programs or services.
Substitution:
Post-secondary education from an accredited college in Environmental or Natural Resource studies; a physical, biological or natural science; planning; or engineering will substitute for the required experience (3 semester hours/4 quarter hours equal one month).
