Job Description Summary
The research enterprise at the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) and the University of Pennsylvania is in constant need of highly-motivated research administrators to manage all aspects of sponsored projects including grants management, contracts administration, proposal development, compliance, invoicing and payroll.

PSOM’s research administrators are a diverse group of professionals who come from various backgrounds such as healthcare, finance, administrative support, operations, project management, education, and paralegal. These key roles support world-renowned researchers who are working to eradicate disease and improve healthcare around the world.

Job Description

We are seeking recent graduates or career changers who are interested in beginning a career in research administration. If you join us, you will participate in a six month learning program that includes classroom training, job rotations, coaching and cohort support. The Research Administration Trainee program, which includes full Penn benefits, is designed to provide the experience and training needed for new college graduates or individuals with some work experience to begin a career in sponsored research administration.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Administration Trainee role is a full-time position that prepares an employee for entry-level roles such as grants coordinator or financial coordinator within one of the many research departments at PSOM.

The Research Administration Trainee completes training in:
IT applications commonly used in research administration

Core concepts in research administration, sponsored projects, and compliance

Basic skills for critical thinking, service delivery, and collaboration

Successful transitions into departments or central offices.

Trainees will be required to participate in learning activities such as:

Online training modules in basic concepts (10%)

Instructor-led sessions to apply and integrate concepts (20%)

Simulations that help to develop critical thinking, problem solving, and relationship-management skills (10%)

Case studies based on active PSOM research awards (10%)

Individual coaching from the course director and other qualified research administration subject matter experts (10%)

On the job rotations in academic and administrative departments (40%).

Upon completion of the six month training program, trainees will have acquired the skills to move into a full-time research administration position within the Perelman School of Medicine.

Qualifications:
Education: Associates degree and 2-3 years or commensurate education and experience required. Experience in budgeting, communications, project management, legal documentation and/or education a plus but not required.

Flexibility and openness to work in a variety of roles

Team player with a strong desire to be an active, long-term participant in the growth and success of PSOM’s research administration team

Ability to adapt and learn quickly
