Job Description : W. M. Keck Observatory in Kamuela, HI is looking to hire a full-time Telescope Support Technician to support daily telescopic operations for our observatory in alignment with our core values of safety, integrity, respect, discovery, and service. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TELESCOPE SUPPORT TECHNICIAN
As our Telescope Support Technician, you help with our most valuable assets: our telescopes! You directly assist our team’s success by performing daily operations support tasks. Every day, you check out the telescopic equipment and begin the startup process. With great attention to detail, you configure the equipment, instruments, and dome according to the night’s requirements. You perform tasks that are essential to the telescopes’ functioning such as milling slit masks and servicing cryogenic systems.
You regularly report to your supervisor concerning the progress and the problems of the observatory. When necessary, you perform other important duties such as driving company vehicles to transport employees or removing snow and ice from the outside of the facility. You take great pride in maintaining our telescopes and keeping our sights aimed at the stars!
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A TELESCOPE SUPPORT TECHNICIAN
Associate degree in a technical field or equivalent work experience
3+ years of experience in a highly-technical or science operations environment
Experience with following standard operating procedures
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
Driver’s license and clean driving record
Experience working at an astronomical observatory or in an industrial environment with large machinery would be a bonus but is not required. Are you a strong communicator who can clearly convey information and build effective relationships with staff? Can you handle multiple projects at the same time? Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment? Can you remain calm and work well under pressure? If yes, you might just be perfect for this position!
