Job Description : General Definition of WorkPerforms protective service work enforcing local and State laws and ordinances for the keeping, regulation, and protection of animals, investigating complaints, capturing animals, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Police Sergeant.Qualification RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Essential FunctionsUpholds and enforces City ordinances in regard to animals; issues warnings and civil notices for animal control violations; ensures compliance with all notices; testifies in court when necessary.Captures stray and feral animals with various live box traps, nets, and catch poles; transports and processes captured animals into shelter.Receives, investigates, and answers complaints concerning stray, wild, nuisance, or owned animals and other wildlife; patrols and checks for animals running at large, licenses, and vaccinations; issues appropriate warning notices and citations.Provides information to the public regarding ordinances, regulations, and spay, neuter, and rabies clinics available; educates citizens and encourages humane treatment of animals.Investigates animal bites on humans and animals; prepares associated bite reports; issues quarantines and associated letters of release.Maintains appropriate records, logs, and files and prepares reports.Operates a motor vehicle and animal handling equipment; performs minor maintenance on assigned vehicles and professional equipment.Assists with general office duties; answers telephone; receives inquiries, complaints, and service requests and resolves them within the framework of established policies and procedures or forwards them to appropriate party for disposition; assists the public with the completion of standardized forms or documents; accepts and processes fees.Attends classes, seminars, and continuing education courses to stay abreast of changing regulations and technologies.Performs the duties of a Police Officer as qualified or assigned.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesGeneral knowledge of the laws, ordinances, and regulations governing animal control; general knowledge of the geography of the City; general knowledge of the care, control, and handling of wildlife and animals; skill in the application of specialized animal capture techniques and in the use of a firearm; ability to collect facts and prepare reports; ability to enforce ordinances and statutes with firmness and impartiality; ability to deal tactfully with the public; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to recognize rabies symptoms and some knowledge of the methods and procedures to be followed; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other law enforcement officers, judges, attorneys, veterinarians, and the general public.Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Physical RequirementsThis work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking and sitting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment;
