Job Description : Position Type: Equity and Student Support/School CounselorDate Posted: 3/16/2022Location: Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary*POSITION TITLE: Elementary School Counselor*DEPARTMENT: Equity and Student ServicesREPORTS TO: PrincipalFLSA STATUS: ExemptWORK SCHEDULE: 190 daysDATE REVIEWED: 03-2022TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Maintains an up-to-date, in-field certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission; salary and length of contract to be established by the Board of Education and the Superintendent.PRIMARY FUNCTION: City Schools of Decatur (CSD) is dedicated to supporting equitable outcomes for all students through advancing racial equity, accelerating student learning and building and sustaining a positive culture and climate. Successful candidates will demonstrate the desire to work effectively with multicultural communities and to move the goals of CSD forward . Candidates will utilize an equity lens when developing and delivering guidance and counseling services that focus on academic, career, and personal/social development for students and families.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.Develop and implement a school-based, data-driven comprehensive counseling planDevelop and maintain working relationships with diverse coworkers, community members, customers, etc.Commits to CSD’s goal of dismantling systemic racism and generating racial equityProvide support services for students in the areas of academic and career programs, personal and social emotional mattersCounsel students based on observations, conversations and referralsProvide personal counseling for students, families and groups to help them learn greater self-understanding, acceptance of responsibility and better decision-making skills, etc.Provide group counseling for interaction, communication, and support skill developmentConsult with administrators, teachers, support staff and outside agencies to promote cognitive, affective,and behavioral development of studentsAssist students in making successful transitionsInteract with internal and external resources to help students and familiesConduct home and agency referrals when appropriateFollow system mandated reporter protocol to address and report child abuse and neglect concerns as outlined by O.C.G.A. §19-7-5 (2016)Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignmentEnsure adherence to ethical practicesQUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functionsREQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A master’s degree in school counselingValid in-field service certificate requiredPREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 3 or more years experience as a School CounselorS-6 or Higher certification in School CounselingEVALUATION: Performance of this job shall be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: To perform the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, or hear. Lifting up to 30 pounds may be required on an occasional basis. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
