Salary: $4,600 to $5,600 per month (SR-22, Step C to H).
Note: Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant’s qualifications, and other relevant factors.

Duties Summary
This class reflects responsibility for independently planning and implementing interpretive* projects to enhance visitor interest and awareness of the natural and cultural resources located in State parks. The work involves identifying and assessing the condition and interpretive value of a park’s natural and cultural resources; conducting and analyzing visitor surveys; evaluating the effectiveness of any existing interpretive devices/activities in the park; and developing and implementing an interpretive plan for the park which may include the installation of interpretive devices and/or activities and/or the alteration of visitor paths or other physical features of the park in order to maximize visitors’ experience of the park and to minimize impact on and preserve the natural and cultural resources of the park. The scope of projects varies from segments of an interpretive plan, such as the assessment of the condition of park resources or the development of exhibits for a visitor center; to the development and implementation of an interpretive plan for a cultural site, such as a heiau site, within a major park complex that has a wide variety of resources and interpretive themes to be developed; and performs other related duties as assigned.
A position in this class is also responsible for developing and coordinating a volunteer program and providing technical guidance and advisory services to park staff and others within the division and in the community on matters concerning interpretation.
Interpretation is an educational activity, which aims to reveal meaning and relationships through the use of original objects, by first-hand experience, and by illustrative media, in addition to communicating factual information. The Interpretive Program aims to develop and make available information, through interpretive means (e.g, brochures, signage, exhibits and displays, visitor centers, guided tours, storytellers, etc.) to promote visitor awareness and respect for unique natural and cultural/historical resources in our State parks, and to protect and preserve these resources. Natural resources include land formations, plant and animal species, etc., and cultural resources include archaeological sites such as heiaus, historic buildings, scenic views, and other cultural significant places.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

Basic Education/Experience A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Specialized Experience: Two and one-half years of progressively responsible professional work experience which involved planning and coordinating interpretive projects and activities. The experience MUST have demonstrated knowledge of preservation and protection of cultural or natural resources, and interpretive methods and techniques, including visitor survey/analysis procedures, and the ability to develop and write interpretation plans and evaluate the impact of interpretation on the resources involved, and work effectively with individuals and groups.
