Job Description : JOB/POSITION TITLE: Director of Development
STATUS: Salary, Exempt
PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Director of Development leads all Hawaiian Humane Society (HHS) fundraising programs and partners with the President & CEO and members of the Board of Directors to meet all annual contributed revenue goals from individual donors, corporations, foundations, and government agencies. The Director of Development also oversees the final phase of HHS’s Capital Campaign to fully fund and sustain our new campus in West Oahu. The Director of Development plays a significant role in strategic planning; budget preparation; and high-level donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. The Director of Development leads the development team and provides quality people care in accordance with HHS’s mission, goals, and leadership philosophy while applying the highest ethical standards.

Supervises: Annual Giving Manager, Special Events Manager, Campaign Coordinator, Grants Officer, Gifts & Database Coordinator
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:
People Leadership
Lead the advancement team with vision, purpose, and drive to raise the revenue needed to support Hawaiian Humane across two campuses. Routinely ensure the development team is staffed and structured effectively to meet these needs, utilizing creativity and ensuring volunteer support is well integrated into the department’s activities.
Hire, train, coach, mentor and evaluate performance of the Development team. Recommend professional development training that broaden staff member experience and effectiveness.
Strategic Leadership
Provide strategic leadership to the Annual Giving Manager in raising operating revenue from established and new sources. Direct Annual Giving Manager in preparing the direct response fundraising calendar and offering innovative donor retention and acquisition messaging in partnership with Direct Response consultants.
Provide strategic leadership to the Special Events Manager to successfully achieve fundraising goals for two major annual fundraising events: Pet Walk and Tuxes & Tails and other potential fundraising opportunities.
Lead the Campaign Coordinator in effectively working with the Campaign Committee, prepare for Campaign Leads and Committee Meetings, and aid committee members in their ongoing Campaign prospect outreach.
Lead the Grants Officer in preparing proposals and reports to institutional funders and prospect research. Lead effective relationship building and strategic communications with program officers at foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
Lead the Gifts & Database Coordinator in the effective and consistent recording of all donor data, the accurate preparation of fundraising reports, and the timely stewardship of all donors.
Work with the Planned Giving Consultant to secure new legacy gifts in support of the mission and to ensure current legacy donors are properly stewarded.
Works with other consultants as needed in support of Hawaiian Humane’s development program.
Major Gifts & Fiscal Responsibility
In partnership with the President & CEO and members of the Board of Directors, actively identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors and prospects. Provide strategic direction to executive leadership and Board members in their major gifts work.
Review, evaluate, and make strategic enhancements to existing fundraising programs on an annual basis. Routinely report to the President & CEO and Board of Directors recommendations to enhance HHS revenue sources.
Effectively manage resources – both people and dollars – for the maximum benefit of HHS. Prepare and execute development department income and expense budgets on an annual basis. Monitor revenue and expenses in partnership with the Director of Finance.
Assure compliance with all legal, tax, and government requirements and reporting.
Keep current on fund development activities and trends through participation in appropriate continuing education, associations, and licensing bodies.
OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:
Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB CONDITIONS:
Hours: Regular 40 hour work week, Monday to Friday typical schedule, with other hours based on operational requirements and special event needs.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Advanced knowledge of fundraising methods, and a proven record of accomplishment raising significant funds from multiple sources.
Demonstrated experience raising major gifts from individual donors is essential.
Excellent leadership, relationship, and trust-building skills.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and meet deadlines.
Strong time management and follow-up skills.
Experience with capital campaign fundraising is a plus.
Excellent computer and internet skills and experience with Microsoft Office products.
General understanding of the animal welfare and veterinary industries is a plus.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent training/experience, plus five or more years (5+) of increased responsibility leading an advancement team
