Sounds True, founded in 1985, is a multimedia publisher specializing in spirituality, holistic living, and transformational learning. We are seeking a full-time Editorial Director to join our team.
This role will be responsible for overseeing content and creative editorial operations for Sounds True’s publishing list (books and audio), including overall brand integrity, content development, and people management, to ensure our products represent a consistent level of substance and quality. This person will help identify and implement publishing industry best practices and suggest tools for making strategic and data-informed decisions to help continue growing the depth and success of Sounds True’s publishing program.
The Editorial Director will also personally acquire, manage, and developmentally edit 8-10 innovative and high-quality books per year that are in keeping with Sounds True’s mission and publishing strategy.
Responsibilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of the spirituality, psychology, relationships, health, healing, and self-help book marketplace and trends, including awareness of a broad spectrum of topics, including health and healing, spirituality, creativity, personal and professional wellness, conscious leadership and business, self-help and personal development
Managing all processes of book and audio acquisition through publication for the entire editorial team, including managing relevant staff
Sharpening Sounds True’s editorial focus and helping to determine the right mix of content and product types
Increasing the efficiency of the team’s workflow and publishing processes, including implementing new editorial tools, processes, and systems as needed
Working effectively with other creative leaders to refine strategies, improve best practices, find efficiencies, and generally make Sounds True better
Providing regular reporting of progress toward overall acquisitions and editorial goals, including personally acquiring and developmentally editing 8-10 new book projects annually
Identifying and maintaining a reliable list of freelance developmental editors to support select projects
Identifying potential authors, developing proposals, presenting new projects to the acquisitions team, and negotiating offers with authors and literary agents as necessary
Ensuring the quality, relevance, and thoughtfulness of all creative editorial work
Superior editorial judgment and excellent developmental editing skills
Cultivating and managing relationships with authors and literary agents
Brainstorming, creating, and composing new project proposals for content and marketability
Researching and evaluating industry trends, competitive titles, and professional needs in the designated fields, including conference attendance and travel
Representing each book acquired through titling, creative direction, and subsequent editorial phases, including developmental editing and transmittal tasks for each title

Qualifications:

Minimum 7-10 years of relevant editorial experience
Significant management experience, including mentoring, hiring, terminating, etc.
Established literary agency contacts
Strong portfolio of titles previously acquired and edited
Proficient knowledge and experience of contractual negotiations, auctions, etc.
Excellent, succinct presentation skills
Ability to effectively communicate with all levels across the organization
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Strategic planning and execution prowess
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Proficient knowledge of MS Office and Google Suite
