Job Description : Environmental Justice Coordinator (Project)This recruitment is to fill one full-time exempt position located within the Executive Director’s Office. All staff are required to report to offices and work sites as needed. This team helps support the core strategic leadership initiatives of the agency.The Equity and Environmental Justice Program consists of the Equity and Environmental Justice Manager, Tribal Liaison and Environmental Justice Coordinator and supports the agency’s efforts to build equity across the agency and our partnerships, and to ensure environmental justice within our programs.What you will be doingYour primary objective is to coordinate with Partnership staff and other state agencies to accomplish all phases outlined in the HEAL Act. You will collaborate and be an active contributor in the discussions, tool development, and decisions of HEAL Act implementation. You’ll also play a part in executing the Partnership’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Environmental Justice (EJ) Action Plan, and in ensuring the use of best practices in community and partnership engagement. We will count on your environmental justice experience and technical skills in a variety of ways, including developing tools and finding resources to communicate DEI and EJ across the agency and with partners, and serve as an advisor on EJ strategies for staff and the Management Conference. Your ability to value others and their lived experiences, promote brave spaces for learning, and strive for equity and justice are essential.The Washington State Legislature passed Senate Bill 5141 in 2021, also known as the Healthy Environment for All (HEAL) Act, intended to reduce environmental health disparities and improve the health of all people in Washington by implementing the recommendations of the Environmental Justice Task Force. These recommendations advise state agencies on how to incorporate environmental justice principles to reduce environmental health disparities when implementing policies and programs. The act also addresses the disproportionate exposure of environmental hazards to Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, along with low-income communities. Implementation of this work will require coordination with the Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Department of Ecology, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Transportation, tribal communities, and other external partners.Who we are looking forYou can work independently, yet enjoy working in groups and in collaboration to accomplish a goal. agency staff and external partners in implementing the provisions of the HEAL Act.Participate in interagency subcommittees.Support the advancement of environmental justice within ecosystem recovery.Assist in the execution of the agency’s DEI and EJ Action Plan across agency planning, accountability, communications, boards, and science divisions.Assist in the implementation of the phased EJ community assessment, including coordinating community engagement and creating communication channels with communities.Ensure use of best practices for engaging current partners and while expanding and building new partnerships.Engage and coordinate across Partnership teams and provide support in integrating DEI and EJ commitments into practices.Assist in the progress tracking of environmental justice outcomes for Puget Sound recovery efforts.Develop tools and resources for communicating DEI and EJ across the agency and with partners.Assist in designing and implementing training materials for staff and Management Conference members.Participate as an active member of the agency’s internal DEI working group.Serve as a technical advisory for staff and the Management Conference to support meaningful incorporation of EJ strategies and actions into Action Agenda updates, Partnership products as appropriate, and analysis and storytelling of environmental justice outcomes for Puget Sound recovery efforts.QualificationsSuccess in this position requires that one models collaboration, ensures accountability, values differences, commits to a respectful workplace, engages in self-reflection, and cultivates the promotion of equity and inclusion.Required Experience:Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental justice, public administration, policy studies, interdisciplinary studies or related field and any applicable experience in public policy or social justice and environmental and/or natural resource managementORAssociate degree in environmental justice, public administration, policy studies, interdisciplinary studies or related field AND two years of experience in public policy or social justice and environmental and/or natural resource managementORAt least four years working experience with public policy or social justice and environmental and/or natural resource managementAdditional Requirements:One year or more of experience working on issues of justice, diversity, inclusion, and equity, including deep awareness of systems of oppression, power, and privilege.One year of experience working with environmental justice and/or historically marginalized communities.Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including active listening) to be applied to a broad variety of audiences and situations.Commitment to social change work and environmental justice.Experience in leadership furthering a vision of supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout all facets of an organization and the work with the recovery community.Preferred Experience:Two years of experience with environmental justice, Title VI, and community involvement.One year of professional experience related to natural resources policy, planning or management.One year of experience working in conflict situations and demonstrating sensitivity in navigating and maintaining relationships.Familiarity with the state legislative process.Familiarity with federal, state, and regional funding programs and annual/biennial funding cycles.A general understanding of roles and the interrelationships between local, county, regional, tribal, state, and
