Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Coordinator for the Kipuka, Native Hawaiian Center at Pu’uloa (NHCP) the primary emphasis of this position will be to provide direct, on-going, and comprehensive assistance to Native Hawaiian prospective and first year students in order to increase their enrollment, persistence, graduation, and university transfer.
Identify, develop, and implement appropriate student services functions and activities for program cohort members using a case management approach that lay a strong foundation for career exploration, cultural enrichment, and financial aid/scholarships in the Lauhoe program through flexible scheduling and internet based delivery.
Coordinate and deliver weekly seminars to include cultural enrichment activities of Hawaiian knowledge; plan and implement Summer Orientation.
Develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate a monthly calendar of community outreach, admissions/financial aid assistance, career exploration, and cultural enrichment activities.
Develops and monitors an internet-based networking site for students.
Designs and disseminates notifications to students about Lauhoe activities through electronic and social media platforms.
Track students in the Lauhoe program to provide qualitative and quantitative data for grant reporting and enters progress notes in internet-based student record system.
Design and/or coordinate cultural enrichment activities which includes traditional and contemporary forms of Hawaiian knowledge (e.g., arts, sciences, language, music, dance, martial arts, literature, natural resource stewardship, architecture, and teaching/learning); activities include, but are not limited to guest speakers, workshops, presentations, performances, field trips, and malama aina (natural resource stewardship).
Collaborate with NHCP support staff, to hire, train and supervise student peer mentors in delivering cohort activities to include but not limited to meetings on a weekly basis, data collection and analysis of program’s effectiveness.
Working with the faculty and staff’s budgetary, curricular, and programmatic expectations, negotiates workshops/speaker fees with presenters and prepares fiscal paperwork in accordance with the College’s procurement procedures as well as allowable Federal grant expenditures.
Prepares and maintains documents regarding cultural resource contacts and creates a database of information for future workshops, lectures, and presentations.
Prepare reports, proposals, and budgets relevant to the program.
Plans, orders, picks up, and sets up supplies (ex. tables, chairs, coolers) and refreshments and cultural enrichment activities, as required.
Evening, weekend, and off-campus assignments may arise periodically.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in education, counseling/guidance, psychology, Hawaiian Studies, social work or related field and 2 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for providing program coordination and/or community organizing and outreach; or equivalent education/training or experience.
Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in educational or cultural programs demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with educational or cultural programs.
Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in the educational or cultural programs.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
Experience working with Native Hawaiians in a community or educational environment.
Considerable knowledge of and working with the Native Hawaiian culture, to include but not limited to Hawaiian practices, Hawaiian language, and Hawaiian cultural protocols.
Demonstrated outreach experience and knowledge of marketing and potential recruiting sources (e.g., high schools, adult learners, nontraditional students), and experience working with potential sources of prospective students.
Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated
Desirable Qualifications

Coursework in Hawaiian Studies or Hawaiian Language.
Degree in Hawaiian Language.
Demonstrated experience with spreadsheets, database, social media and/or presentation applications.
Demonstrated experience with the University’s mission, as it relates to becoming a leading indigenous-serving higher education institution.
Knowledge of student services including college admissions, financial aid, retention services.
