PRCS- Creating Community through People, Parks, and Programs
Loudoun County’s Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services is currently seeking qualified applicants for a Naturalist position at the Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park located in Ashburn, VA. Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park is a brand-new park featuring 17 lighted athletic fields, an event center, nature center, playgrounds, disc golf course, and more! The new 257-acre park will offer a wide variety of programs to serve the community.
If you are passionate about nature, have strong organizational and administrative skills, and enjoy working with the public, then this could be the position you’ve been looking for. Hanson Park’s development of seasonal nature programming and special events require creativity, dedication, and a proactive work method. This position requires the ability to maintain and build effective and professional relationships with staff, the public, and the community.

In addition, this position:Develops, implements, and evaluates program plans for nature programming/environmental education.Conducts community education and outreach.Creates seasonal programming and special events.Recruits and supervises program instructors, maintains schedules and records for volunteers and participants; assists with training to ensure program policies and procedures are met.Works with Park management on themes for various displays and purchases appropriate educational materials.Oversees the input of data into an automated registration system for all classes, groups, and programs, and provides reports after each program season to Park Manager.Develops and/or oversees the creation of promotional materials for nature programming.Completes monthly inventory of supplies; ensures safe and organized storage of materials.Maintains an effective and professional relationship with the public and responds to inquiries regarding plants, animals, and other natural history matters.Work hours vary and may include weekdays, weekends, and evenings.

Job Requirements
Associate’s degree in Environmental Education, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or a related field; three (3) years of related work experience developing and implementing programs related to natural history/environment/ecological science; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Valid driver’s license required.Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
Hiring Range: $46,488.43- $62,759.92
Salary Commensurate with Experience
Special Requirements
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSPrevious experience developing and implementing programs relating to natural history/environmental/ecological sciences is strongly preferredProficiency with Microsoft Office and desktop publishing software strongly preferredCertifications as Virginia Master Naturalist, Certified Interpretive Guide or Certified Interpretive Trainer, and Natural History Field Study Certificate desiredMembership of the North American Association for Environmental Education, National Association of Interpretation encouraged
Post Conditional Offer Contingencies
Pass pre-employment criminal, credit and DMV background checks. Valid driver’s license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification). Pass TB test within 30 days of hire prior to beginning work and each following year. Must annually complete a sworn disclosure statement or affirmation disclosing any criminal convictions or pending criminal charges. Hold or obtain First Aid/CPR certifications prior to hire or immediately upon hire; hold or obtain Virginia Master Naturalist certification (or equivalent) with 1 year of hire. Have or take OSHA (Bloodborne pathogens) training within 30 days of hire; complete County required courses as determined by Park.
