Job Description : Job Description and Duties
This position is posted on a 12 month limited term basis with the possibility of being extended up to 24 months or becoming permanent.
Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs/Principal, the Office Assistant (Typing) (OA), will perform various clerical duties. The OA will be fully aware of the mission, vision and services of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), the Office of Correctional Education (OCE), California Correctional Institution (CCI), and Tehachapi Mountain Adult School (TMAS) that are relevant to the position. The OA will maintain personal safety by employing professionalism, wearing a Personal Alarm Device, performing regular security checks of their work area and or other department sanctioned means. Transcribe data involving Administrative matters from the Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs relative to academic, vocational and college programs, as well as developing correspondence, including, but not limited to, requesting inmate education transcripts and preparing them for distribution. Independently handle routine office duties such as Institutional mail, ordering supplies, receiving book orders, etc. Maintain audit system to ensure timely receipt of reports, and guarantee policy adherence and correct format usage. Responsible for maintenance of all inmate education files. May supervise inmates. Perform on a daily basis, frequent, unannounced, random checks of inmate areas to identify any security risks and deter sexual misconduct. Will attend training classes and conferences as scheduled, make copies of appropriate data, establish and retain communication lines between supervisor and subordinates, relieve supervisor of routine duties such as supply requisitions/distribution, etc., and perform other duties as required. The OA will prepare and/or type correspondence, memorandums, miscellaneous reports; distribute mail; maintain files; make photocopies; attend meetings and IST classes; maintain appointment calendar; respond to and direct telephone inquiries; type attendance rosters, statistical reports and documents. Screen calls from staff and public; act as a resource person; channel calls to appropriate staff; and follow through on specific inquiries, both verbal and written. Type work-related documents for academic and vocational staff, as assigned by the Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs or designee. Maintain all department, Institution and education manuals, including operational procedures. Attend Annual In-Service Training. Other duties deemed appropriate for the Office Assistant Classification.

Pursuant to the Public Health Orders (Guidance for the Use of Face Coverings) issued by the California Department of Public Health and the directive Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccines and Testing for Institution Staff issued by the Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR), all staff who work in correctional settings who are unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, or have not provided a record of full vaccination shall undergo twice-weekly COVID testing with at least 72 hours between each test. Masks must be worn in accordance with local requirements, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) requirements, and directive (Required COVID-19 facial coverings for all institutional and facility staff) issued by CDCR.
Working Conditions
California Correctional Institution is located in the Tehachapi Mountains approximately 325 miles south of Sacramento and approximately 120 miles north of Los Angeles.
CCI is a Multi-level, Sensitive Needs Yard, facility consisting of five (5) facilities, encompassed within a campus style layout with varied terrain. Work in this location may require exposure to varied temperatures dependent upon the season.

One year of experience in California state service performing the duties of an Assistant Clerk.

(One year of clerical work experience may be substituted for the required education.)
