Grow what’s next. Grow your future. This position is part of an innovative and fast-moving team that helps develop new crop varieties for farmers around the world. The successful candidate needs to have a basic knowledge of plant biology and/or horticulture, be comfortable with computers and mobile devices, and be interested in working both indoors and in the field. They will be expected to apply the concepts of Mendelian genetics to interpret genotypic and phenotypic data and to design crossing strategies. They need a positive and collaborative attitude, good communication and critical thinking skills, and a knack for creative problem solving. This full-time position involves supervising a group of Research Assistants and is located on the island of Kauai.
Responsibilities – What You’ll Do:
Manage the day-to-day activities associated with backcrossing operations as part of the Trait Integration team, working collaboratively to produce quality conversions within established timelines. This may include planting, tagging, sampling, transplanting, pollinating, harvesting, shelling, and packaging resulting seed.
Create experiments, organize and supervise plantings, manage the selection of top-progeny, and maintain related databases.
Coordinate with other groups to ensure key steps are completed in a timely and collaborative manner
Communicate openly with team and supervisors on matters of relevance
Promote positive work attitudes and harmonious relations
Supervise full-time employees and contingent workers, ensuring work is performed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with protocols and regulations
Willing and able to work flexible schedules and weekends during peak periods when required
Support all Hawaii Research center-wide goals and support other projects when needed
Qualifications
Qualifications – What You’ll Bring:
Ability to manage people
Ability to work as part of a larger, culturally diverse group, as well as independently when needed
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Understand and be able to apply Mendelian genetics
Knowledgeable in plant biology and basic agronomy
Organization and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities
Ability to bend, reach, and lift repetitively. Occasionally required to carry 20-50 lbs
Tolerance, willingness, and ability to work in warm conditions and variable environments
Computer competency
Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in tropical agriculture and/or horticultural operations
Comfortable with large, complex databases
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, botany, plant breeding, agriculture, or related plant science field
Two to four years related experience
Alternatively, equivalent levels of relevant education and experience
