Position : Zoo Librarian/Media Specialist
Job Description : The Zoo Librarian/Media Specialist manages the Zoo’s special library and provides expertise in developing, updating, acquiring and coordinating the use of educational information resources in various formats. In support of the Zoo mission, The Zoo Librarian/Media Specialist is responsible for the acquisition, inventory, maintenance and circulation of educational media; maintains Zoo audio visual equipment and coordinates departmental record retention and organization. The Librarian also serves as an informational resource to staff, volunteers, and the local community.
Essential Functions:
Oversees web based online resource library programming, including maintenance and coordination. Develops methods of organizing and disseminating electronic media/files via website, intranet and other outlets.
Masters sophisticated electronic media and makes recommendations regarding the nature, quality and ethical uses of information available in these and more traditional tools.
Catalogs, inventories, and monitors the use of educational resources.
Coordinates Zoo archival processes.
Trains, supervises, reviews, and retains volunteer library team.
Responds to public requests for information about conservation, animal care, education programs, and other zoo related topics.
Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required. All Cleveland Metroparks employees must be prepared to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required.
Assesses future needs and develops long and short-range goals. Proposes and implements policies and procedures for:
Electronic and paper files
Obtaining materials via Interlibrary Loans as economically as possible
In-house indexing and acquisition of commercial indices
Acceptance of donated materials
Cataloging and classification of library materials, including: books, periodicals, journals, archived material, and various media materials
Acquisition and disposition of library materials and information
Writes grants to raise funds for and coordinates library projects and related information management systems.
Advises Director of Conservation Education of Library needs in materials, services, supplies, equipment and volunteers.
Maintains accurate records, monitors library budget and any other deemed specific to the Library by the Director of Conservation Education.
Responsible for training, scheduling, and supervision of seasonal staff, library volunteers and library and media science graduate students.
Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
Updates and enhances own knowledge by involvement in continuing education for professional growth (i.e., attends relevant conferences, seminars, in-service trainings, and certification programs)
Operates as an education team member (conducts tours, assists with animal care, conducts workshops for adult and youth audiences).
Works with education management team on departmental decisions and projects.
Supports all divisions in operation of the Zoo.
Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.
Requirements:
Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS). Experience working in a library including reference and multimedia, cataloging, and special library experience preferred.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license under the laws of the State of Ohio.
Experience managing digital assets and website related processes and audio visual equipment. Should be familiar with Tags, ADA/Accessible Description, Metadata and digital filetype best practices.
Experience with Library of Congress and relevant cataloguing using information through WorldCat for books, journals, media (i.e. data/audio/video files).Experience with the American Memory Project a plus.
Museum biofact cataloging with knowledge of CCO, CDWA and Getty vocabularies is a plus.
Knowledge of archive best practices for video, photo, slides, correspondence, newsprint, and digital born content.
Experience with project management and supervising staff or volunteers
Experience in emerging technologies (app planning, website UX design, habitat technology discussions, video creation
Experience working with the public or community partners on projects or student research/reference work preferred.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
Management skills and strong business acumen, including problem solving, vision, ability to manage multiple programs and meet deadlines, collaboration, leadership, decision making and ability to analyze diverse facts and develop clear and concise reports and recommendations.
Ability to work cooperatively with others.
Proficiency in software programs including all Microsoft Office programs.
Mature professional attitude and considerable discretion, including ability to manage confidential information.
Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.
