The immediate vacancy is with the Department of Public Safety and located at the Oahu Community Correctional Center in Kalihi.

Salary: $4,600 to $5,600 per month (SR-22, Step C to H)
Note: Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant’s qualifications, and other relevant factors.

Duties Summary
Plans, organizes, coordinates and evaluates a recreation program for an assigned corrections work area; conducts varied and comprehensive recreational activities; and performs other duties as assigned.
Note: Applicants must be available to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Education: A bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, recreational therapy, leisure education, psychology, corrections, sociology, human development or other recreational or behavioral science field. Course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in courses such as community recreation, physical fitness, abnormal psychology, counseling, behavior management, criminal justice, human personality and behavior.
General Experience: Six months of progressively responsible professional work experience in an organized athletic/recreation program for groups of people, which included professional level experience in planning, organizing, coordinating and carrying out of such athletic/recreation programs.
Specialized Experience: One year of progressively responsible professional work experience in planning, organizing, coordinating and conducting recreation programs and/or activities in a correctional setting, to stimulate and sustain the interest of the participants and contribute to their physical, creative, social and cultural development and overall well-being.
Driver’s License: Some positions require possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment. The immediate vacancy has this requirement.
Supervisory Aptitude: Demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects of supervision, e.g., by serving as a group or team leader, by the completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; and/or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK AND COMPREHENSIVE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:
You will be required to sign an Applicant’s Consent, Authorization and Request to Release Information Waiver. This gives your consent and authorization to release any and all records, information, and opinions regarding your background, education, employment, character and reputation needed by the Department of Human Resources Development and/or the Department of Public Safety to make a thorough investigation to determine your fitness and suitability for employment with the State of Hawaii.
This authorization shall apply to include all criminal history records, information and opinions, military records, all educational and employment history records, and traffic abstract records. For this purpose, you waive any and all privileges you may have to maintain such records, information and opinions as confidential, including but not limited to the privileges arising out of the foregoing relationships.
Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement: As required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA), Federal law states that “….an agency shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with inmates and who:
(1) Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution.
(2) Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.
(3) Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in #2 above.
(4) Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
