Job Description : This position works under the supervision of the Garden Manager, and in collaboration with the lead staff of the Friends of Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden located in Kona.Position Responsibilities: 1. Horticultural maintenance expertise. Provides horticultural expertise for the maintenance and growth of the living plant collections. Assists other staff in monitoring conditions of plants in Garden grounds and maintaining their health through horticultural care and propagation. Assists other staff to provide for optimum plant nutrition and protection from pests for plants in grounds and nursery. Assists Garden staff to design and install landscaping, irrigation, and garden and nursery infrastructure.2. Nursery operations and sales. Oversees nursery operations and provides horticultural expertise in the nursery and plant sale areas in accordance with Garden needs, projects, and policies. Assists in propagation, maintenance, and care of nursery plants as needed.3. Propagule collection and Seeds. Assists in field collection of propagules for Garden collections and other projects. Sets up and maintains seed handling and storage in accordance with professional standards and Garden needs.4. Record-keeping. Maintains propagation records, accession records, and other records as necessary. Oversees the maintenance and growth of the Gardens botanical collection and plant tags; ensures the accuracy and adequacy of collections records.5. Volunteer support. Recruits and supportsnursery volunteers. Coordinates and supports volunteers, school groups, interns, project partners, Museum staff, and others who work in the Garden nursery or grounds.6. Plant Sales and Distribution. Manages plant sales and other plant distribution projects on and off–site. Seeks market opportunities and conservation partnerships. Develops fundable horticultural-based projects (e.g. Arbor Day site). Seeks to develop horticultural opportunities to offset costs of nursery operation.7. Program participation and development. Contributes to interpretation of Garden by leading workshops, demonstrations, and guided tours, and assists in the development of educational programs. Represents Garden in community through participation in community organizations, outreach, and interactions with leaders of other organizations8. Professionalism. Interacts with staff and Garden clients with tact, courtesy, and unqualified respect at all times. Stays motivated and projects a positive and professional attitude towards fellow workers and clients. Cooperates and supports teamwork; maintains and strengthens customer and staff relationships.9. Safety protocols and practice. Works in a safe manner so as not to endanger fellow staff members, volunteers, and visitors. Complies with safety rules and regulations and establishes safe work practices. Reads all safety materials received. Reports unsafe conditions and unsafe acts directly to supervisor. Promptly reports accidents to immediate supervisor. Maintains assigned work area and equipment free of accident producing conditions.10. Garden support. Seeks opportunities to advance the mission, financial security, and visibility of the Garden. When possible, promotes innovation and research.11. Other duties. Performs other duties as able to accomplish the Garden’s goals, such as:writes or contributes to proposals, overseeing, and reporting grant-funded projects for Garden;works with Garden’s and Friends’ staff to develop strategic initiatives;facilitates interactions between the Garden, the Museum, and project partnersMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of Native Hawaiian plants, plant propagation, and nursery management, and horticultural managementFamiliarity with plant nutrition and pest control, irrigation systems, and endangered species regulationsCurrent Hawai‘i driver’s license.MS Word, Excel, and ability to manage records/databases.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONSEducation and SkillsB.S. in Hawaiian native plant horticulture, ethnobotany, or related field desirable, but extensive experience in propagation and horticultural care of native Hawaiian plants may be substituted for degree.Knowledge of traditional Hawaiian ethnobotany and experience in botanical gardens desirable.Familiarity with MS Access and ArcGIS or similar programs.Direct Reports NonePhysical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
