Job Description : Overview:
The Museum Technician will provide ongoing care and documentation to a collection of artifacts, specimens, and/or artwork for a specified University museum, gallery, or library in accordance with relevant state and federal laws and regulations and University policies and procedures.
Under general supervision of the Executive Director for the USU Museum of Anthropology, the incumbent will serve as a NAGPRA & Cultural Policy Museum Assistant charged with supporting all operational-level aspects of the Museum’s Repatriation and Cultural Policy functions and reporting. The incumbent will perform analytical studies on a variety of policies, projects, programs and issues in support of the Museum’s Repatriation obligations, set forth by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) of 1990, and in line with the Museum’s strategic mission. The incumbent will assist in the development of a Native American Advisory Council. The incumbent will also support research of new, pending, and changing systems, programs, and guidelines related to relevant Federal regulations, international legal instruments, and codes of professional practice, as well as the Museum’s own Cultural Policy issues including—but not limited to—international restitution, research access, loans, acquisitions, and traditional care.
The incumbent will assist the MOA in drafting outside correspondence and preparing for consultation on all issues of Repatriation and Cultural Policy, to communicate Museum activities in these areas to and from Campus and USU executives, advisory committees, faculty, managers, staff, and students, as well as tribal members, tribal governments, lineal descendants, government officials, and the general public. The incumbent will assist the MOA in policy and program planning, development and administration, and in interpreting, monitoring and analyzing information regarding policies and procedures, and providing consultative services regarding general management to department administrators. The incumbent will also prepare indices of available literature relating to collections for use by students and other researchers, performs routine maintenance such as accessioning, filing, loans, exchange and data management, and answers requests for identification and information from other institutions, descendant communities, scientists, and other stakeholders. Additionally, the incumbent will also respond to requests for reproduction and/or in-person and virtual use of media collections in collaboration with Collections and Registration staff.
This person will perform diverse activities, including curatorial activities, in support of museum operations. Assist MOA in using advanced operational concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex issues related to Repatriation and matters of Cultural Policy. Regularly assists on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. The Museum Technician does not have the decision-making authority of a Curator.
Responsibilities:
The Museum Technician reports to a Department Head, Director, or Associate Director. This individual may hire, train, and supervise student and/or part-time employees.
Typical Functions
Consultation and Claims:
Participate in on-site and telephonic tribal consultations regarding potential or on-going NAGPRA claims
Coordinate NAGPRA visits and repatriations
Facilitate Cultural Policy documentation requests and in-person research
Conduct object research for NAGPRA claims and other Cultural Policy inquiries
Assist with composition of NAGPRA claim reports and Federal Register publications
Act as liaison with agency representatives for all activities involving federal or state collections
Assist in the creation of the Native American Advisory Council (NAAC) for the museum
Assist with preparation for all Native American Advisory Council (NAAC) events
Performs office management duties, including managing schedules, scheduling meetings, creating and processing forms, and maintaining records and databases.
Conducts education and training for staff and docents.
Serves as the representative to the general public, including answering general questions.
Compliance:
Research potential federal ownership of archaeological collections
Identify current holdings not previously reported to NAGPRA
Assist in the creation or modification of NAGPRA inventories and/or summaries for previously unreported holdings
Document Management and Data Entry:
Maintain digital and archived records of Cultural Policy visits and NAGPRA –related procedures
Document all NAGPRA consultation activities
Document all NAAC meetings
Assist in creation of cultural policies
Produce object reports in response to cultural policy and NAGPRA inquiries
Update C-space records for NAGPRA-related objects, as needed
Other Tasks:
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
May assist in the education of program staff.
May participate in preparing grant proposals.
May advise on new acquisitions to the collection.
May prepare specimens and artifacts for collection.
May manage collection database (accession, deaccession, and cataloguing).
May determine and maintain the appropriate environment in which to store specimens and artifacts.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experienced is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of curatorial principles, methods, procedures, and techniques.
Experience organizing large amounts of information from multiple sources in a logical manner.
Knowledge and understanding of the subject matter assigned.
Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

Skilled with computers and associate software.
Knowledge of research, methodology, principles, and procedures.
