The 2022 Blue Ridge Parkway Trail Team will work with the Student Conservation Association and the National Park Service. This 16-week trail team will be composed of three crew members and one crew leader. The crew members will receive training before starting work, which includes SCA member training, wilderness medicine, CPR, and trail work skills training.
Throughout the season, this team will work to rehabilitate three separete trails along the Virginia section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Work projects will include erosion control, clearing trail corridors, and rehabilitating trail surfaces. This team will be working on the Catoctin Trail (access trail from Appalachian Trail (AT) to Humpback (HB) Rocks picnic area) for two weeks; the access trail from Humpback Rocks Farm area to the AT for two weeks; and the lower portion of the Humpback Rocks Trail for four weeks.
Additional time would be spent on:
Fully rehabilitating the 46 water diverting structures to prolong the life of the Humpback Rocks Trail and reduce long term maintenance costs associated with the trail
Rehabilitate/replace 6 benches situated along the Humpback Rocks Trail
With any remaining time left, the crew can perform split rail fence repairs at the trailhead area of the Humpback Rocks Trail
The team will stay at frontcountry campsites. SCA will provide all necessary support services, crew leadership, transportation, personal safety equipment, and other standard materials/supplies necessary to perform the work.
Team Member Benefits:
$175/week living allowance (paid bi-weekly)
One-time travel allowance ($650)

All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.

All SCA program participants are required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined as having received a booster shot six months after the Pfizer and Moderna primary series and two months after the Johnson & Johnson primary series.

Campsite: small open field off the north end of the picnic area at milepost 7, see attached photo. It is out of sight of the picnic area and its visitors. Potable water is available, spigot in the picnic area. Showers can be coordinated. Electricty can be provided from a generator provided by the site.
