The communications unit manages the public-facing communications for the Colorado Department of State. The unit engages with the general public, media, advocates and stakeholders to provide information regarding the Department’s service and programs.
Description of Job

MAJOR OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:

This position will:
Support all public-facing communications for Colorado Department of State
Support the Department ability to effectively communicate with media, constituents, and the general public
Create and implement communications content and strategy to meet the needs of the Department
Develop and draft written Department communications including press releases, speeches, talking points, newsletters, fact sheets, social media content, memos, and outreach plans
Conduct research, locate information related requests, and evaluate findings
Develop and maintain the Department’s communications calendar
Determine and manage internal process to ensure the timely creation and review of communications materials
Liaise with the media to handle request for interviews, questions, and other requests
Manage and update press list

Assignments for this position are diverse in nature and required determining practical solutions in a fast-paces environment. This person will work independently, manage tight schedules, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and sometimes work nights and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

At leave two years of professional experience in a combination of the following:
Developing and implementing communication strategies
Developing and sending out press releases, outreach plans, talking points, fact sheets, newsletters, speeches
Handling media requests for interviews, questions, and other requests
Ability to cultivate relationships at all levels
Professional etiquette with ability to maintain composure and remain positive under pressure

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Public Affairs, Political Science or a related field. Additional appropriate experience will substitute for degree requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to those candidates with previous State Service related to the work assigned to the position
Public information experience
Experience working for an elected official, or candidate for public office
Crisis communication experience

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYEMENT:

This position will be required to undergo a criminal background check

While a wide salary range is posted for this position, an eventual salary offer is determined by a comprehensive salary analysis, which considers multiple factors including but not limited to education and experience compared to others in the organization doing substantially similar work
