You might be the Forward’s new copy editor.
We are seeking an editor with digital experience to work across our 15+-member staff of journalists on news, politics, religion, culture, features and opinion, including website articles, newsletter products and more. The job reports to the Executive Editor and is critical to our brand and credibility as we transform from a legacy print publication to a digital-only, platform-agnostic outlet building community across our diverse Jewish communities. It is a full-time role represented by the News Guild with a salary of $46,000 to $65,000 depending on experience, and generous benefits.
Responsibilities include:
Proofreading daily articles and longer-term projects for forward.com
Assisting with production on articles including sourcing photos, writing display copy and programming pages to maximize reader engagement
Selecting and posting articles from wire services and publishing partners
Workshopping headlines and otherwise optimizing our report for SEO and social
Helping train staff and improve workflow systems around style, grammar, etc
Maintaining a Forward stylebook on Jewish terms
Founded in 1897 as a Yiddish, Socialist broadsheet, the Forward went fully digital in 2019 and in 2021 was described by The New York Times as “America’s most prominent Jewish newspaper.” We are a reader-supported nonprofit committed to independent reporting and to providing a platform for civil discourse on divisive issues; we want every American Jew, across identities, politics and geographies, to see themselves both reflected in our pages and respectfully challenged by them. We reach 1 million to 1.5 million readers a month, a third of them under 35.
