As Head of People, you will be responsible for helping to find, develop, motivate, and retain the team at Courier Newsroom. You will act as a champion for the company culture and will support senior leadership and department leaders, allowing the company to develop and grow quickly. In this role, you will be responsible for all human resources-related activities.
As a fast-growing, mission-driven media organization, we believe that exceptional people deserve the best that we can provide in terms of company culture. As Head of the People, you will be responsible for building a People Operations team that can scale and support the company as it grows. People Operations will support our newsroom, business operations, and collaborate closely with other inter-company teams.
An ideal candidate will have wide-ranging human resources experience, from recruiting to administering benefits and managing the employee evaluation process, to fostering a workplace culture that values diversity, inclusion, and equity.
This role is a VP-level leadership position that will report to the Chief Operations Officer. This position will manage up to two full-time employees, including the organization’s Human Resources Manager. Remote candidates based in the U.S. are welcome to apply as long as they are able to maintain ET business hours.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Leading an HR department and nurture a company-wide culture built on openness, empathy, efficiency and meritocracy that optimizes employee experience and development aligned with company-wide values and goals
Strategizing development and implementation of all organizational human resources related initiatives and activities, with a specific focus on the recruitment, development and retention of all Courier Newsroom FTEs and an extensive contractor and freelancer network, that:
Ensures compliance with employment, benefits, insurance, safety, and other federal and state laws, regulations, and requirements
Maintains knowledge of compliance with laws, regulations, and best practices in employment law, human resources, and talent management
Collaborating with executive leadership to define the organization’s long-term mission and goals; identifying ways to support this mission through talent management, professional development, annual reviews, and recruiting
Continuing to develop Courier Newsroom’s Human Resources capacity to be agile, complete, and scalable as the company grows with a hybrid office and remote culture
Providing human resources support and consultation to the CEO and across the business on the most complex issues, supporting staff, managers and senior leadership in all related areas
Driving a rigorous performance, professional development and performance-based compensation program that is data-driven, aligns with business goals, addresses team development needs, ensures market competitiveness and rewards and retains our people
Providing the COO and CEO with useful data and insight on an ongoing basis to help guide decision making, and allow the company to scale effectively and efficiently
Developing and implementing all HR-related internal communications in order to communicate and support the communication of staff members at all levels in the company in the interest of supporting business development, success and change
Building proximity with executive leadership, managing editors, and all business stakeholders and staff; continuing to be an exceptional partner, coach and facilitator who adds value to our business and team dynamics at every level
The ideal candidate will have:
At least 10+ years of human resources or people operations experience or relevant experience working in a fast-paced environment
A relevant degree or equivalent, as well as practical experience with proof of human resource-related qualifications and experience in best practice
Demonstrated experience working with diverse teams to develop an inclusive culture
A proactive approach to seeing around corners, preventing and solving problems before they escalate or create harm to the organization or its staff members
An ability to challenge conventional approaches and a willingness to build a unique or different approach
Strong emotional intelligence
Superior organization skills, with meticulous attention to detail
Strong business ethics, including the ability to work in a highly confidential remote work environment
Start-up experience preferred and interest and/or relevant experience in the news industry or digital media
Compensation
The starting pay range for the Head of People role is $145,000-$165,000, commensurate with experience.
