POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision performs work of routine difficulty in reading meters and recording meter readings of residential, commercial, or industrial users; performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Reads meters on assigned routes, which requires a minimum of six to twelve miles of walking and climbing up and down approximately 100 sets of stairs per day.
Moves manhole covers weighing up to 125 pounds to read meters located in meter pits.
Records readings on an electronic reading device or upon a paper document.
Checks to see that meters are operating properly and reports faulty or broken meters via the electronic reading device or on paper documents for repair or replacement.
Occasionally assists in meter reading related office work.
Makes special readings as directed; updates meter locations, conditions, and special messages on the electronic meter reading device.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Simple arithmetic.
The geography and street locations of the City.
Skill in:
Making arithmetic computations.
Meeting and dealing tactfully with the public.
Moving and lifting moderately heavy objects.
Reading and transcribing numbers with speed and accuracy.
Ability to:
Work in all weather conditions.
Walk and climb steps on a continuous basis, approximately twelve (12)miles per day, under varying weather conditions.
Safely and properly move objects such as manhole cover and meter box lids weighting 125 pounds.
Work with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Ninth grade reading level and one (1) year of experience in public contact work. ADDITIONAL OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Must be bondable.

In this position, the employee will frequently sit, lift, push, pull, drag and/or move up to 188 pounds. The employee will constantly stand and walk in all weather conditions. Occasional kneeling and crouching may occur with this position. Speaking and listening are constant essential functions of this position.
