ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The Office of University Communications & Marketing (UCM) is the primary source for news and information about USF. The UCM team is responsible for producing and promoting university news, coordinating media relations, managing crisis communications, conceiving and implementing advertising and communications campaigns, producing university publications and maintaining major university websites.
POSITION SUMMARY:
USF is looking for a dynamic News Writer with strong journalistic ethics and the tenacity to discover and articulate meaningful stories that meet USF’s strategic goals. Reporting to the Director of News Content and Production, the News Writer is responsible for producing news articles that represent USF’s position as leading research university, a major economic driver and community/corporate partner that produces top talent and projects that have a broad impact.
The News Writer must have the desire to learn new things and the ability to translate complex subject matters for a general audience. This individual must be versatile with experience reporting in a traditional newsroom environment and the skillset to complete stories on tight deadlines.
This individual is required to build and maintain relationships with faculty members and administrators, and enterprise story ideas. Responsibilities include coverage of university research published in top tier academic journals, institutional news and feature stories about the people and projects that make USF unique. The News Writer must have a strong understanding of brand journalism and how to write for targeted audiences. Some experience with photography and videography is preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research and write time-sensitive news articles for USF’s digital and print platforms about a wide range of disciplines that demonstrate USF’s strategic goals as a leading research institution. Articles may be disseminated as news releases and pitched to mainstream media outlets.
Co-create with a team of multimedia journalists, social media strategists, media relations experts and marketing professionals.
Plan, shoot and edit photos to accompany news stories.
Publish content to the USF website and archive imagery in the USF Digital Asset Management system.
Other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in communication, marketing, public relations, technical writing, digital media, or related field, with 4 years of experience in related positions; or a Master’s degree in the fields listed above and 2 years of experience.
PREFERRED:
Five years professional, salaried experience in a traditional newsroom position. Proficient in AP Style, photography/videography, Adobe Photoshop and content management systems.
