JOB TITLE: PATIENT ACCESS REPRESENTATIVE II (REGIONAL)

JOB LOCATION: HHSC Kaua’i Region – Kaua’i, HI

SALARY: $3,295/month at 1.0 FTE (SR13 ; BU03/BU63)

JOB FUNCTION: These positions are located in the Patient Financial Services Department at Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). KVMH, SMMH and The Kaua’i Region Clinics are part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Patient Financial Services Department gathers and processes demographic and financial information to complete patient registration; collects data and inputs information into the hospital’s computer system; provides cashier services, financial counseling, and switchboard services.

The Patient Access Representative (PAR) IIs are responsible for interviewing patients and/or accompanying parties to obtain patient demographic and insurance information. Other duties include transfer and discharging patients; switchboard and PA system duties; cashiering duties; and public relations duties. These positions will be required to work shifts, including work on the weekends and holidays. The PAR IIs will also be required to work in multiple locations within the region as needed. These positions report directly to the Patient Access Manager, or its designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education Requirement: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience Requirement:

General Experience: Two (2) years of typing, stenographic, clerical work, cashiering, data input, customer service skills or any combination of these experiences which duties demonstrated knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, standard office equipment; and the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out procedures in clerical work systems, speak and write simply and directly, observe differences in copy and proofread words and numbers quickly and accurately, and operate various kinds of office equipment; and ability to deal effectively with others in eliciting information and providing service.

Specialized Experience: One (1) year of work experience performing admission activities in a hospital; interviewing patients and/or responsible persons to secure information, securing signatures for insurance benefits; arranging for method of payment for costs not covered by insurance; and preparing admitting records.

DESIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: office practices and procedures; grammar, spelling, punctuation and word usage; use of standard office machines; medical terminology; techniques of interviewing others to obtain pertinent information; patient accounting operations, registration and standard intake techniques; third party payor requirements, credit and collection practices; federal regulations including Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), Advance Directives, Medicare, Medicaid, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) as they relate to hospital intake and payment for services; customer service philosophies and practices.

Ability to: make arithmetic computations; compare names and numbers rapidly and accurately; type at the rate of 40 net words per minute and be computer knowledgeable in a windows based environment; operate a telephone switchboard, teleprocessing terminal, and inter-communication system; file materials numerically and alphabetically; follow oral and written instructions; accept and follow instructions; cooperative, communicate positively and effectively with staff, patient and patient family; understand, explain and apply policies, procedures, rules and regulations pertinent to the admission of patients; keep matters confidential; interview others to obtain pertinent admissions information; and the ability to speak and write clearly.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain-printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Occasional standing/walking.

This position may be required to work on shifts, including evenings, and weekends, and/or holidays in multiple locations within the facility to meet the needs of the patients.

COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT

COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. After receiving a conditional offer of employment, all prospective new HHSC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. New employees are required to provide confirmation of their full vaccination status by presenting their CDC vaccination card or VAMS Certificate prior to their start date.
