Job Description : 2022 Science Educator PositionAlaska Geographic at the Murie Science and Learning CenterDenali National Park & PreserveIf you enjoy working and teaching in a wilderness setting and possess the skills to create meaningful connections for visitors to Denali’s pristine ecosystems, you may want to consider Alaska Geographic for summer seasonal employment!Alaska Geographic partners with the National Park Service to offer education programs and visitor services through the Murie Science and Learning Center (MSLC) in Denali National Park and Preserve. Denali is a six million acre park unit, including over two million acres of federally designated wilderness recognized for its large unique mammals and spectacular terrain. Denali also hosts a diverse collection of subarctic plants and migratory birds, unique geologic formations, glacial features, and North America’s highest peak. The unique wildlife and tremendous mountain scenery draw many hundreds of thousands of visitors to Denali each summer season.The Murie Science and Learning Center provides a stimulating and nurturing environment dedicated to helping visitors learn about Denali’s natural history and unique ecosystems. Alaska Geographic wishes to retain and support experienced educators for a summer of learning, exploration, and fun.The primary responsibility of instructional staff is the delivery of informative and engaging science-based programs that will leave visitors with a lasting connection to Denali and an appreciation of scientific research and stewardship of our wilderness area.Primary ResponsibilitiesDeliver high quality interpretive presentations to tour groups visiting Denali including bus excursions, dinner presentations, interpretive walks, and other formal and informal custom education programs.Assist with equipment maintenance, facility projects, and program support and development.Depending on experience and qualifications, science educators may work on multi-day field courses and youth programs as a facilitator, guide, or instructor.Desired QualificationsEnvironmental education, with work experience as a naturalist, or within the fields of biology or other earth sciences.Knowledge of wildlife research and natural history of the subarctic.Excellent public presentation skills.Proven group management skills in outdoor settings.Ability to maintain a positive and upbeat attitude within a fast paced work environment.Ability to work well individually, in teams, and with a high degree of responsibility.Experience working with a range of audiences, from adults to youth to family groups.Enthusiasm for and experience working with elementary to high school age participants.Experience with computers and common office software programs.Minimum of Basic First Aid and CPR certifications.
