Job Description : The Maui Humane Society is committed to protect and save the lives of Maui’s animals, accepting all in need, educating the community, and inspiring respect and compassion towards all animals.Job/Position Title: Dog Adoption Counselor Status: Nonexempt Date: March 2022Primary Purpose: Assisting the public with adoption inquires, matchmaking, providing customer service on the adoption floor, gathers information from the Dog Animal Care Technician (DACT), Behavior Coordinator (BC), Animal Care Attendants (ACA) on adoptable dogs in the shelter and in foster. Under the direction of the Director of Animal Care (DAC) and supervised by the Animal Care Technician Supervisor (ACTS)Essential Duties/Functions: (See Policies and Procedures Manual for specific details)Adoption Related Duties: Greet and counsel prospective adopters and assist with selection of dogs best suited for them.Respond to adoption related inquiries via email, phone and in person.Assist customer with adoption paperwork/questionsAssist potential adopters with the medical/behavior issues of adoptable dogsAssist with the creation and update of information on dog identification cards, appropriate signage placed on front and back of the kennels.Coordinate/and or conduct meet and greets with ACAPrimary liaison with the DACT, BCHandles visitations for all adoptable dogs.Participate in Dog Play Group (DPG) to get to know the dogs, their behaviors and understand to their individual needs/preferences for a successful adoptionParticipates in dog rounds to gather the necessary information to provide to potential adoptersParticipates in 360 Committee meetings as necessaryCreates and maintains Pet Request in Petpoint and prioritizes making calls, updates memos/holds in PetpointSeeks to make improvements in areas for adoption, matchmaking, communication between Animal Care Department and Customer Service Relations.Develop a Follow up program with adopters to give guidance, resourcesParticipates in adoption events on and offsiteGeneral: Interact with co-workers and volunteers in an efficient and courteous manner to ensure a cooperative team environment amongst all departments.Participate in disaster preparedness and response activities for the shelter and community as it pertains to pet animal related needs.Assist with training volunteers in related work areas.Responsible for keeping relevant work areas clean and organized.Maintain and promote a positive public image standard relevant to MHS.Help promote fundraising activities and solicit support of agency overall.Attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings. Attend educational venues as recommended/approved.Report and correct any safety hazards or unsafe use of MHS equipment.Other duties as assigned by the DAC and ACTSWorking Conditions: Outdoors with dogs, air-conditioned shared work spaceEquipment Used: Computers, copier, pet related items (leashes, collars, harnesses, carriers, pop up kennels, tracking collars) shelter vehicle.Working Hours: Position requires regular and predictable attendance for a 40 hour work week. Includes weekend work and attendance at offsite events including the occasional evenings.Mental Demands: Requires the ability to multi-task and have a high degree of alertness and attention to detail. Ability to read and write and be verbally articulate. Must be comfortable around all types of animals. General knowledge of animal behavior. Excellent customer service skills including the ability to handle stressful or emotional situations and difficult interactions in a calm, professional, and compassionate manner with the public as well as coworkers and volunteers.Physical Demands: Requires the ability to be physically active during the entire shift. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs. Ability to safely manage and control animals of all kinds.Qualification Requirements: Minimum Qualifications: High School Graduate or equivalent.Prior experience in customer service or hospitality field. Demonstrable public relations and customer service skills.Must be able to multitask, be a quick learner and transition between various tasks as needed.General Requirements: Must treat animals humanely, with love and concern both on and off the job, and transmit these values to others.General knowledge of pet behavior and care. Ability to work with and handle all kinds of animals in a safe and responsible manner.Confident computer skills including experience with Google Apps, Microsoft Word, Excel, social media, databases, internet navigation, and research.Goal oriented, self-starter with ability to work both independently and in a team environment.Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions.Possession of a valid driver’s license with a clean driving and criminal abstract.Positive attitude a must!Additional Qualifications that would benefit this position: Prior background in animal welfare.Animal behavior experience.Prior work experience in customer service.Job Type: Full-timePay: $15.71 – $20.29 per hourBenefits:401(k)401(k) matchingDental insuranceEmployee discountHealth insurancePaid time offVision insuranceSchedule:8 hour shiftHolidaysMonday to FridayWeekend availabilityApplication Question(s):A cover letter is also required to submit along with a resume.Work Location: One location
