Job Description : JOB TITLE: Museum EducatorDEPARTMENT: EducationSUPERVISOR: Education Manager of Visitor ExperienceJOB CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, non-exemptMISSION and VISIONThe Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association (PFSMA) was founded in 1978 to establish the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum to serve as a memorial to those gallant Sailors who manned the Submarine Force in WWII, during the Cold War, today and into the future; to maintain as a centerpiece of this memorial museum the Fleet Submarine USS BOWFIN (SS 287), for permanent display in Hawaii, as an educational tool and as an inspiration to present and future generations; to create an Educational Outreach Program within the Community including an endowed Bowfin Scholarship Program; and be a centerpiece for public awareness and understanding of the Submarine Force including its evolution, history and future.It is the goal of every employee to ensure visitors have a positive and memorable experience at the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum. It is considered a core competency for all employees of the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum.GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTIONThe Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum completed a major renovation project in 2021, introducing new exhibits that highlight the history and technology of the U.S. submarine force. National and international visitors of all ages tour the museum each day to learn more about the stories and heroes of the past, as well as the challenges and opportunities of the future. The museum incorporates historic material, artifacts and interactive exhibits that feature Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts. It is our vision to establish learning programs in the museum that will inspire students.This is an excellent opportunity for an educator with experience in education. Interest in STEM, history and its artifacts are a plus.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESWorks under supervision of and as assigned by the Education Manager of Visitor Experience. The Museum Educator develops and facilitates the museum’s education and public programs with focus on innovative learning activities offered daily on the museum floor and Innovation Carts for museum visitors.Trains staff and volunteers so that they can demonstrate the activities to the public.Prepares displays and materials to promote programs.Aligns museum’s program offerings with Hawaii Department of Education’s (HIDOE) State Standards.Attends weekly Education Department’s meetings and take notes for minutes on as-needed basis.Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.Minor Duties and Responsibilities:Demonstrates an awareness of different backgrounds and cultures.Supports PFSMA policies for preventing Sexual Harassment and eliminating work place violence.The responsibilities listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. PFSMA reserves the right to revise or change position duties and responsibilities as necessary to accommodate changing organizational needs.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSBachelor’s degree in education, science or social sciences; teaching experience preferred. Experience working in a museum setting is desirable. An interest and/or understanding of the Navy, WWII, general military history, and submarines is beneficial.COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Ability to deal effectively with difficult people or situations involving complex issues, and establishing and maintaining cooperative and productive work relationships.TECHNICAL SKILLS: Proficient in Windows computing environments, data management software, Microsoft Office product including Word, Excel, and Power PointPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSLight Work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, talking. Close visual acuity.
