This is an exciting multi-discipline position working for a Forest Service district recreation program. The position will include assisting trail crews and staff in all matters concerning trail maintenance and sustainability. Interns will be responsible for recreation operations and planning support. Core program work will include recreation data collection, public information/education program delivery, developed recreation site operations/maintenance, cabin maintenance, trail maintenance, and road maintenance.

Interns will work with permanent and seasonal staff to engage with volunteers on trail management, design, construction, and partnerships to help develop a sustainable trails program. Other duties will include support of field operations in developed recreation, cabins, backcountry patrol, and resource programs. Interns will need to bring a positive attitude, willingness to work in inclement (wet) weather, long days and spiked out in remote field camps.

Compensation Amounts:

$1,300 – one time RT travel allowance
$600 – weekly living allowance ($15 per hour equivalent at 40 hours per week)
$330 – monthly housing allowance to pay for USFS bunkhouse costs ($1,650 total – you are expected to use this to budget for your USFS housing which you will pay the USFS for)

All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxesPlease note this position is NOT eligible for an AmeriCorps education award

Conditions of Employment:
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined as having received a booster shot six months after the Pfizer and Moderna primary series and two months after the Johnson & Johnson primary series.

Location Description
These positions will be located in Moose Pass, AK on the Seward Ranger District.Located on the Kenai Peninsula, Moose Pass is a friendly and picturesque little town with a year-round population of about 350. It is tucked away in the mountains along the shoreline of Upper Trail Lake at Mile 29 of the Seward Highway, a National Scenic Byway.

Professional Development Opportunities
These positions will be immersed with SRD staff and will receive training in Bear behavior/ safety and the use of bear spray; Aviation User Training, Defensive Driving, Chainsaw training and others.
