The Office carries out the mission of promoting and elevating NewYork-Presbyterian’s reputation by creatively promoting its high-quality, innovative care and highlighting the many ways the health care system helps patients, families and communities “Stay Amazing.” The content and creative team is responsible for overseeing the development of written and multimedia content shared on NewYork-Presbyterian’s content platforms including its award-winning digital content platform, Health Matters, and its 12 owned social channels that represent the entire NewYork-Presbyterian enterprise, encompassing 10 hospitals across the Greater New York area, more than 200 primary and specialty care clinics and medical groups, and an array of telemedicine services. This team works as a newsroom, reporting, writing and producing written stories, graphics, videos, and podcasts about a wide range of health and wellness topics, human interest stories about amazing patients and staff, as well as stories about innovations in care and research, and NewYork-Presbyterian’s work to promote health justice.
Under direction of a Senior Editor, a staff writer reports, writes, edits and helps oversee approval processes for specific communications and content, including health-related news and feature stories, press releases, educational content related to medical conditions and treatments, and other communications intended for external audiences. The writer will be expected to post content to websites and other hospital content platforms. Collaborates with members of the communications and marketing team to help develop, plan and implement communication strategies to reach press, internal and external audiences and collaborates with creative team to produce multimedia content.
Essential Job Duties
Researches, writes, edits, and helps oversee approval process for a wide range of content including hospital-related press releases, news and feature stories on health and wellness topics, and educational content related to medical conditions and treatments for a wide range of platforms including NewYork-Presbyterian websites, newsletters and other consumer platforms, in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare experts and members of the communications and marketing department. Responsible for posting content to online platforms.
Under the guidance of senior editor, drafts, edits and assists in the review of written communications (press releases, press statements, obituaries and other content for external audiences), ensuring editorial standards are met and proper branding is used.
Interacts with physicians, leaders, administrators and other hospital staff as well as external contacts (public relations professionals at agencies, institutions and corporations), to interview, obtain information and/or request review of press releases and other written materials.
Travels to NewYork-Presbyterian locations as needed for meetings, to conduct in-person interviews and to assist with photo and film shoots when needed. Attends regularly scheduled meetings on behalf of the department and reports to a Managing Editor.
Serves as in-house/local reporter, covering events as needed. Develops articles for websites, newsletters, online content and press materials.
In consultation with the department leadership and other media relations and social media staff, develops story ideas and original content aimed at bringing positive media attention to NewYork-Presbyterian.
Monitors ongoing trends in health news in both traditional and digital media outlets. Understands local and national health media landscape
Preferred Criteria:
Experience writing health and science stories and press releases
Familiarity with academic medicine setting and NYC healthcare landscape
Required Criteria:
College Degree in English Journalism, Communications or related field.
A minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a writer in journalism, public affairs or healthcare-related setting
Ability to write and edit creatively, concisely and relatively quickly
Must be able to write a wide range of content– familiarity with AP style is preferred
Experience with translating medical terminology into lay language
Experience developing multimedia content
Must be able to meet tight deadlines and work efficiently.
