Job Description : Under the supervision of the Emergency Room Clerk Supervisor or designee, performs clerical and receptionist duties and maintains the physical environment of the area. Assures that all registration requirements for Emergency Room Encounters and Inpatient Admissions are accurate and completed. Responsible for capturing all financial and demographic information from Emergency Room Encounters and Inpatient Admissions patients. Assures there is a physical presence at the Emergency Entrance at all times.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience with Hospital Registration preferred.

One year clerical or secretarial experience in a health care setting. Must demonstrate good organizational skills as well as proficient grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Commitment to work evening hours, weekends, holidays and summer.

Ability to deal with all members of the public in a patient, courteous and tactful manner even during stressful situations.

Ability to work without constant supervision and to initiate work on projects which need to be done accurately and efficiently.

CPR “heart saver” course certification.

Ability to use computers: Able to learn and use RPMS system to enter admissions, discharges, and transfers (ADT), input acuity levels, daily reports, Medevac and patient travel into computer system as necessary.

Must be proficient at word processing and Microsoft Office applications.

Essential Functions

Performs registration duties related to admission and discharge of patients. Gathers all necessary information for a complete and accurate registration process for Emergency Patients and patients admitted to the Inpatient Department.

Assures there is a presence at the ER registration desk. Able to retrieve and print dictations for providers as needed.

Answers telephone, radios, fax machine and alarm panels quickly. Transfers calls and/or faxed paperwork to the appropriate departments or persons.

Knowledge of all maintenance panels and alarms located at the Emergency Room and Inpatient including the Isolation Room panel/alarm and the Infant Abduction System.

Prepares and keeps current census sheets, daily diet sheet, dietary requisitions, and delivers them to proper departments as necessary.

Performs clerical duties related to the admission and discharge of patients. Makes follow-up appointments for patients as requested by discharge nurse. Makes air transportation arrangements for discharged patients including ground transportation, if needed.

Assists in orientation of new staff to the unit. This includes registered nurses, medical staff and other unit clerks.

Able to use the computer, ability to enter patient information into the RPMS system for admissions, discharges, transfers, acuity levels, daily reports and enters all patient names, diets and restrictions in to the Master Diet Report for the Dietary Department on a meal time basis. Communicates with Security Department on patient boarders coming in after hours for check-in.

Assists in typing memos and reports as deemed necessary.

Makes all arrangements for patient travel and Medevac if Charge Nurses requests. Maintains TA/TR log book and enters all patient and Medevac travel into the computer on a weekly basis. Completes Medicaid travel for all departments as needed. Coordinates plane and pilot arrangements as directed by the Charge Nurse, ensures completeness of a copy of patient records, assists in contacting Medevac escorts, arranges ground transportation and assist Charge Nurse with contacting the appropriate House Supervisor at receiving facility and ground transportation of receiving facility for the Charge Nurse. Assists patients to find alternative avenues of travel when patients do not meet BBAHC patient travel policy criteria.

Assist with care for the patient and the patient’s family’s needs. Obtaining special foods/diets and comfort supplies as needed.

Routinely receives and transfers emergency medical calls to the appropriate individuals. Must be able to obtain contact information from caller to provide to nurse or physician

Provides coverage for Medicaid Travel if Outreach staff not available.
