About The Position
This training position prepares incumbents for performing public safety work involving the protection of life, property and the delivery of Scottsdale Fire Department programs. Incumbents are sent to the Fire Academy for training in firefighting methods, emergency medical services, fire code enforcement and prevention practices, salvage operations, public relations, physical fitness and associated topics to prepare for appointment as a Firefighter.

Selection Process:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
A minimum of 18 years of age, with a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
College course work that includes any combination of firefighting, EMS and academic subjects is preferred.
Licensing, Credentials and Other Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver’s licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Arizona Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) Certification prior to start date.
Current (within six months of hire date) Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) Certification.
Preferred: Current Paramedic certification.
Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required depending on department/section assignment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
Attends Fire Academy to learn fire-fighting skills and related rescue techniques, emergency medical techniques, fire codes, fire apparatus and equipment use, fire prevention and investigation methods, salvage and overhaul operations through classroom training, drills and observation.
While wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), performs firefighting tasks (e.g. hose line operations, climbing, crawling, lifting and carrying heavy objects, ventilating roofs or walls, forcible entry, etc.), rescue operations, and other emergency response actions.
Communicates (give and comprehend verbal orders) while wearing personal protective ensembles and SCBA under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, and drenching from hose lines and/or fixed protection systems (sprinklers).
Holds nozzles and directs water streams.
Raises and climbs ladders.
Uses chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other firefighting equipment.
Performs salvage and overhaul operations.
Administers emergency medical treatment to injured persons.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity and under emotional stress during emergency situations.
Participate in physical fitness programs and comply with Fire Academy requirements.
Successfully complete CPAT testing and certification.
Operate all types of portable fire extinguishers, power tools, hand tools and related equipment such as smoke ejectors, forcible entry tools, pike poles and axes.
Exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, explosives, firearms, water hazards, violence, disease and pathogenic substances.
At times, sustained performance of physically demanding work, typically involving climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 90 pounds).
At times, perform rescue duties requiring searching, finding and rescue – dragging or carrying victims that can weigh over 200 pounds to safety.
Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to perform emergency medical services or perform duties on the fire ground.
Perform duties requiring frequent pulling of 50 pounds or more, such as removing hose from apparatus, pulling ceilings, starting power equipment and opening doors on the apparatus.
Lift arms above shoulder level to cut vent holes with an axe or to force entry into automobiles using specialized tools.
Use appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE), including a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) which requires the ability to tolerate increased respiratory workloads while performing tasks in environments that may be immediately dangerous to life. This includes working in extremely hot or cold environments and withstanding exposure to toxic fumes and other hazards for prolonged time periods.
Operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer, telephone, calculator, copy and fax machines requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movement.
Travel to various locations.
