The Government Affairs Specialist is responsible for partnering with state and local elected officials to advance county-wide and city-specific policies and regulations that protect and promote the health of King County residents, under the direction of the state and local affairs lead.

Job Duties
Primary responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:
Serving as the King County Board of Health Administrator. In this capacity, the incumbent will:
Execute a work plan for the Board of Health, working with the Director of Public Health-Seattle & King County, the Chairperson of the Board of Health, board members, and the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Be the lead staff person on the Board of Health’s restructure required by state law, including managing outreach, recruitment, engagement and selection.
Research and assess policy issues for the Board to consider and make recommendations and advocate the Department’s position.
Support subject matter experts to brief the Board of Health on a variety of issues impacting the public’s health including editing reports and presentations.
Coordinate Board of Health meetings, including coordinating presenters, preparing briefing materials and talking points.
Lead multijurisdictional Board of Health planning meetings, representing Public Health-Seattle & King County.
Ensure all work brought to or led by the Board of Health is guided by and includes racial equity analysis.
Representing the Department at meetings with lawmakers.
Establishing and maintaining relationships with elected officials and their staff and work across jurisdictions on intergovernmental issues.
Researching and accessing issues and recommending strategies based on their impact to the PHSKC.
Researching legislative proposals and their impact to the Department and Health of King County. Responding to inquiries from local elected officials
Managing projects to advance the policy goals of the Department.
Assisting in other duties to advance goals of the Department’s government affairs and policy teams.

Necessary Special Requirements:
The selected candidate will be required to pass a thorough background investigation.

Employees are required to adhere to OSHA/WISHA guidelines including but not limited to completing required training on time.
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, which may including evenings. This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is ineligible for overtime pay. At Seattle/King County Public Health we strive to be accessible to those we serve. The duration of this Special Duty/Term-Limited Temporary position expected to last 6-7 months.
Work Location and Telecommuting
Chinook Building, 401 5th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104 with telecommuting by agreement with supervisor. Currently the work is performed mainly through teleworking. However, this may change in the future with requirement to report in office and to meetings as needed.
Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations. King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.
