General purpose: Installation, de-installation and maintenance of artwork in campus galleries.
Summary of Essential Functions:
Installation and de-installation of artwork in campus galleries
Tool and shop upkeep, tracking, and maintenance
Training and supervisory duties of department work-studies
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Install a wide variety of artworks in galleries, and various locations on and off campus
Communicate effectively and regularly with students, faculty, and staff regarding art installation on and off the MICA campus
Meet regularly with staff, students, and faculty to determine and schedule art installation
Work with a gallery setting to assist in a wide variety of artists, including students and faculty
Alongside Galley Installation Manager, create lists of inventory and technical equipment
Alongside the Gallery Installation Manager and Director, help create policies for safety and gallery installation for the campus
Develop and give in-person, hands-on, installation practice workshops for students
Create departmental installation practice instructional videos for the MICA campus students: script-writing, content, filming, editing supervision
Provide on-site scoring for departmental learning outcomes for the College’s assessment process
Develop and maintain inventory of tools, furniture, technical and lighting supplies
Safely transport gallery furniture as needed for installation
Fabrication of gallery furniture: shelves, pedestals, etc as needed
Pack and transport artworks; regional or out of state delivery/pickup
Maintain galleries, including upkeep, painting, preparing, and building walls as needed
Perform other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: technical-based installations (video, LCD projection, etc.)
Knowledge of correct safety practices in art installation and the ability to effectively communicate these with the community
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Ability to work within tight deadlines
Ability to work in a team environment
Ability to work under own direction
Ability to apply creative methods to solve installation problems with an attention to detail
Ability to work unscheduled overtime during periods of installation/de-installation
Knowledge of: complex gallery lighting techniques
Skills: Basic computer skills: Word Excel
Skills: Truck driving
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
Art handling or gallery/museum experience
Certifications/licenses: forklift and lift certification; ladder safety training
Preferred Qualifications:
Basic wood-working knowledge
Basic Technology knowledge
Reporting to this position: Up to 20 work-study students
Conditions of Employment:
Candidate must complete a full background check
Work long hours, including evenings, and overtime as directed
On call for weekend duties as needed
Physical demands and work environment:
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. (may be adjusted depending on position)
Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
Required training: Exhibitions Department Installation Guide and Policy handbook, MICA Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment. (additional training may be added, SEE: EHS Manager training schedule)
