Job Description : NEW ORTHOPEDIC CENTER OF EXCELLENCE!*High Focus on Patient Care Outcomes*JOB SUMMARY: The Sterile Processing Technician is assigned duties performing decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgery center, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of this job description include but are not limited to: Operates all required equipment and machinery accurately and safely, prepares, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and supplies according to parameters of sterilization in accordance with The Department of Health, TJC, OSHA, CDC, and other regulatory standardsMaintains appropriate records, and monitors quality control and infection control standardsProvides asset management and support of surgical instruments and trays belonging to or consigned to the facilityAccurately handles and cares for instruments appropriately, including appropriate selection of cleaning agents, lubricants, examination for function, identification and assembly according to OneSource and preparation for sterilization; retrieves malfunctioning instruments and ensures repairs are completedCorrectly peel-packs supplies/instruments, wraps instruments for sterilization, inspect each instrument for use, function, completeness and cleanlinessCoordinates with Materials Dept to ensure facility sets are stocked to PAR levelsEnsures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all BMC policies, procedures and standards and quality of servicePromotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; Communicate with operating room staff to provide required instrumentsIs responsible for reporting damaged or malfunctioning equipment to SP Manager and/or OR Director, and Material Manager and follow process for replacementResources to nursing staff in all departments regarding responsibilities of proper sterilization techniquesClean, set up, sterilize and distribute instruments as scheduled on each shift.Familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment FailureAdheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include:Ø the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses);Ø handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately;Ø hand washing as appropriate;Communicates effectively with all levels of people.Functions as a contributing team member.Promotes positive public relations to physicians, patients, visitors, other employees, and the community.Maintains competency and environment of care.Participates in performance improvement activities.Provides for patients’/significant others’ rights and safety; strives to manage situations in a manner to reduce risk while following legal and regulatory standards.Performs other tasks and duties as assigned in an efficient, effective and cost-conscious manner, complying with all hospital policies, procedures, and regulations.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATION and EDUCATIONAL AND /OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Ø Associate’s Degree Healthcare related field preferred or a combination of similar education and experience.Ø Certified Registered Central Service Technician by IAHCSMM or equivalent certification.Ø Knowledge of:o Equipment functions sufficient to be able to determine operational adequacy and to distinguish between operator error and equipment malfunctiono Applicable sanitary, infection control, and safety standards sufficient to be able to perform all assignments within the safety parameterso Assembling and wrap appropriate instruments, supplies and equipmento Processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals and medical instruments sufficient to be able to decontaminate and sterilize equipment, supplies and instrumentsØ Ability to lift and move trays of instruments and patient care equipment, i.e., IV pumps, monitors, up to 25 lbs.Ø Is able to perform bending, lifting, and washing using decontamination processes, which will include instrument pans, bins, trays, and carts of various sizes.Ø Tactile differentiation, e.g., temperature, moisture.
