Job Description : Job Announcement
Coordinates and develops a dynamic, inclusive, mission-focused volunteer program for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, with an active volunteer force operating within the shelter and in the community. Works closely and collaboratively with all departments within the organization to develop and grow meaningful volunteer positions. Models and cultivates a culture of positive partnerships between volunteers, staff, and community members. The position is under general direction of the Communications and Outreach Manager. Duties and responsibilities include the following:
Creates and develops volunteer programs aligned with the mission and strategic plan goals of the Department of Animal Sheltering, the Outreach Team, and in cooperation with departments throughout the organization.
Develops a recruitment plan for attracting and retaining volunteers that includes networking with community groups and community leaders to reach potential volunteers of a range of demographic groups.
Coordinates and leads group days of service at the Shelter with County groups, corporate, nonprofit, college, and other groups that inquire
Communicates effectively with volunteers with the ability to mediate, listen, address issues, and to provide corrective action, when needed.
Maintains and executes regular communication with volunteers; in-person with Volunteer Roundtables, informal check-ins, and recognition events; written with newsletters, social media, email communication, and surveys; through the volunteer software program; and formal communication through corrective action procedures and reports.
Periodically reviews and assesses the effectiveness of volunteer programs, both in terms of volunteer satisfaction and in meeting organizational and community needs.
Prepares reports and keeps statistics as requested by the Communications and Outreach Manager.
Participates in budget process as needed and ensure that budget is not exceeded.
Performs other duties and projects as needed.

Note: This position requires flexible scheduling for program needs, including evenings and weekends and weekend rotations for management team responsibility.

Responds to requests for information from potential volunteers and from agencies interested in using volunteers.
Interfaces with volunteers and program staff to determine extent of program need for volunteers.
Formulates, recommends, and implements plans for recruitment; conducts assessment interviews to determine appropriate placement based on interests, skills and abilities of volunteers
Conducts campaigns, through speaking engagements or similar publicity efforts, to obtain volunteers or promote available volunteer services.
Oversees volunteer training, performance management, and recognition.
Acts as agency representative to committees, task forces, community meetings;
Acts as liaison to community, volunteers, and agency staff.
Collects information and prepares materials for distribution related to volunteer services.
Monitors overall volunteer program effectiveness and promotes effective working relationships with program staff to maximize successful volunteer experiences.
Develops job opportunities for volunteers with unique capabilities or volunteers who are homebound or disabled.
Designs program brochures and flyers and writes articles to promote volunteerism.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Employment Standards
MIINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”)
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in social or behavioral sciences, liberal arts, education or personnel administration; plus one year of professional volunteer services coordination experience, including recruitment, selection, and/or placement of volunteers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of progressively responsible volunteer coordination/management;
Two years of supervisory experience;
Experience in an animal welfare-related organization;
Experience working with and handling animals, including orphaned, sick, injured, and behavioral-needs animals of various species;
Experience with volunteer database Volgistics, including updating volunteer records, scheduling opportunities, designing web volunteer applications, and auditing schedule, volunteer hours, and communication pieces in the database.
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and have the ability to communicate effectively with regard to animal care and treatment, and shelter policies and programs;
Must demonstrate the ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain professional composure;
Experience with interpersonal mediation and facilitating corrective action if needed.
Must be efficient and prompt, and must be able to work well under pressure;
Must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team;
Must be computer literate;
Must be comfortable in public speaking and training roles.

None.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or religious reasons will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Otherwise, vaccinated employees will complete the attestation online in the first day of employment.

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to converse with volunteers, visitors, and staff in person, via e-mail, and on the phone.
Ability to create materials and operate equipment necessary to complete work tasks.
Ability to physically move equipment and supplies as needed, including but not limited to pet food, bags of kitty litter, pet carriers, etc.
Must be able to maneuver safely in kennels, dog play yard, cat room, etc.
Sitting and standing for long periods.
Work requires close contact with animals.
