Job Description : The Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences seeks a strong leader to fill the role of Director of Museum Programs & Experiences who will lead efforts to deepen and expand the Society’s impact, and achieve objectives in the organization’s strategic plan. This is a full-time position, reporting to the President & CEO.The Director of Museum Programs & Experiences will oversee all Buffalo Museum of Science (BMS) efforts to create meaningful, personalized, “Wow” experiences for guests and program participants. The successful candidate will:· Lead all aspects of Learning and Interpretation and Guests Services programs and staff, ensuring necessary resources, professional development, and the attainment of excellence in all aspects of their work. Grow and nurture a staff that is committed to the Society’s vision, values, and commitment to excellence.· Oversee the development and implementation of all public-, community-, and school-based programs; evaluate and assess programs to determine continuous improvement opportunities. Ensure BMS programming and activities are fun, financially sound, align with the Society’s facilitation pedagogy and quality standards, and become increasingly inclusive and accessible for all guests.· Stay current with formal and informal educational topics, trends, and developments; provide guidance and expert counsel on best practices in science learning and museum programming; and ensure that NYS MST, Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards are incorporated into program development.· Set and maintain standards for outstanding customer/service and efficient operations in the Guest Services function.· Build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with other cultural, community, and educational organizations, as well as with the local education community; establish BMS presence as a leader in informal STEM learning and program development.· Develop relationships with industry leaders and vendors to facilitate more and supportive partnerships that benefit the Society’s experience, expense and budget planning.· Develop, manage and oversee departmental budgets· Work closely with the development department to secure grant, philanthropic, programmatic and sponsorship support.· Work with the marketing department to ensure appropriate and effective promotion for programs.· Provide leadership to development of organization-wide initiatives including strategic planning, staff engagement, program prioritization and development, and long- and short-term financial planningApplicants to this position must have:At least 5 years of experience in a supervisory role and 5 years of experience managing projects or programs.Strong leadership skills, ability to excite staff around shared goals, and willingness to initiate new practices and eliminate old.Strong knowledge of informal learning process and techniquesFamiliarity with museum programming and best practices.Demonstrated skill and experience in developing and facilitating high quality informal STEM engagement and learning programs for a variety of ages.Ability to think strategically and understand both long- and short- term planning needs and opportunities and prioritize the work of self and others.Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational, and personal communication skills.Ability and experience establishing program goals, measuring progress against goals and analyzing results.Experience in creating business/financial plans to support programs and activities.Lifelong learner with a natural sense of curiosity and respect for science and the scientific process.Bachelor’s degree in science, education, or another applicable field or relevant experience required; graduate degree preferred.This leadership position will require periodic evening and weekend work, and a valid driver’s license.Salary range for this position is $80,000 to $85,000, depending upon experience, with excellent benefits including paid time off, health insurance, 401K with company match, paid holidays and more.The Buffalo Museum of Science is a non-profit educational institution dedicated to providing relevant science programming to learners of all ages.
