Position : Research Aide
Job Description : Works under the supervision of the Education and Outreach Coordinator to serve as an assistant for all current resident researchers and research projects being conducted at Stone Laboratory. Serves as the primary assistant in oversite of the Lake Erie watersnake conservation program including acting as the lead in field mark-recapture studies, laboratory inventory and upkeep of supplies, maintenance of field sampling equipment, supervision of volunteers, captive husbandry of research animals, data entry and website management, assists in end of season reporting. Other miscellaneous duties as assigned. Assists with other current Stone Laboratory research projects and visiting researchers at laboratory including sample collection aboard Stone Laboratory research boats on Lake Erie, laboratory experiments, sample collection assistance, assistance with Research Experience for Undergraduates Program. Serves as the primary assistant for animal care compliance, record keeping, data entry and Stone Lab animal colony husbandry including fishes reptiles and amphibians. Assists in training volunteers and student workers on animal husbandry needs. Assists in necessary reporting for IACUC and Ohio Division of wildlife. Assists with preparation and maintenance of research facilities for utilization by visitors faculty researchers and students. Conducts inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment. Maintains and repairs scientific equipment. Performs other duties as assigned. Position is a part-time temporary appointment from April to late October (flexible beginning and end dates). Position located at Put-In-Bay Ohio.
Minimum Education Required
Two (2) years of college coursework or demonstrated ability in the conduct of routine field work or equivalent combination education and experience.
Additional Education Desired
Bachelor’s degree in life science education, fisheries & wildlife, ecology, biology or related field.
Required Qualifications
Two (2) years of college coursework or demonstrated ability in the conduct of routine field work or equivalent combination education and experience valid driver’s license required Bachelor’s degree in life science education fisheries & wildlife ecology or biology or related field desired knowledge of Lake Erie ecosystems. Successful completion of a background check is required.
Desired Qualifications
Previous field research experience preferred especially pertaining to Lake Erie ecosystems, herpetofauna, or wildlife conservation; Ability to lift 30 lbs. is desired.
