Position : Staff Horticulturalist

Job Description : Reporting to the Horticulture Division Chair at Ohio State ATI, the Staff Horticulturist provides instructional support to Horticulture Division faculty and students; participates in campus learning garden planning and management; and facilitates campus horticulture events; collaborates with faculty in planning weekly lab activities, sets up and tears down labs; orders and maintains supply inventories; maintains lab facilities; assists with student experiential learning through practicum instruction, supervision and assessment; assists in providing educational demonstrations, leading field visits, and guiding student lab activities; provides supplemental learning opportunities at the request of faculty/students such as study sessions or plant ID walks; collaborates with the Academic Greenhouse Coordinator and the Turf Assistant in supporting faculty instructional needs and maximizing resources; collaborates as part of the horticulture team under the direction of the Horticulture Division Chair to plan, install, enhance and maintain multi-season campus learning gardens, ornamental display beds and decorative landscapes; participates in team meetings, creates landscape/garden imagery, prepares documents in a timely manner, and supports and collaborates with faculty and staff in carrying out the combined vision for a high quality, horticulturally-relevant campus; hires, trains, and supervises student employees; leads the student landscape/gardening staff and collaborates with the Academic Greenhouse Coordinator to maximize mutually beneficial use of the student workforce; serves as the lead staff member responsible for the campus woody, herbaceous, and tropical plant collections; produces nursery and perennial plant crops as needed for instructional and campus use; identifies pest issues and applies pesticides as needed; maintains and documents plant collection inventories including shared database with proper nomenclature and accurate labeling; assesses plant health, recommends solutions, and initiates and communicates changes in inventory as needed to maintain plant ID collections; manages the All-America Display Garden; manages the care, inventory, records and labeling of campus dedicated trees; operates large and small power equipment and trains students in equipment safety and procedures; uses standard landscape hand and power tools; plans, prioritizes, organizes and executes daily work plans; communicates professionally and collaborates in decision-making; attends meetings; consults and networks with faculty, staff and green industry representatives to keep current with industry trends; consults with Wooster campus grounds staff and Secrest Arboretum staff regarding mutual landscape/garden concerns; assists as assigned with plant sales and student club activities; prepares landscape sites for state and national competitions, certification testing and horticultural events; provides tours and educational programs and interacts with the public both informally and during campus events; fosters diversity and inclusion and serves as a professional role model to students; other duties as assigned. Position is located in Wooster, Ohio.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor’s Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in horticulture.
Required Qualifications
Required: Minimum two years experience in horticulture; Broad knowledge of, and interest in, plant materials and their cultural needs; Landscape/garden design experience; Strong knowledge of garden maintenance practices and fundamentals; Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple responsibilities; Supervisory experience
Desired: Two years public or botanical garden planning and maintenance experience.
Responsibilities
Collaborates as part of the horticulture team under the direction of the Horticulture Division Chair to plan, install, enhance and maintain multi-season campus learning gardens, ornamental display beds and decorative landscapes (20%)
Maintains lab facilities; orders and maintains supply inventories; hires, trains, and supervises student employees (10%)

Provides instructional support to Horticulture Division faculty and students (20%)
