Job Description : Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking two temporary seasonal Watershed Inspectors with an assigned work location of North Bend. This unique assignment will be within the Watershed Protection unit at Cedar Falls and is critical in ensuring protection for more the 100,000 acres of forested lands as the source water for 1.4 million drinking water customers. Interested individuals should be comfortable working in the mountains in all weather conditions and in most cases alone.

SPU has opportunities for two temporary assignments lasting up to 6 months.

Job Responsibilities:
These positions protect two municipal watersheds, SPU property, SPU personnel, and Rattlesnake Lake Recreation Area for conditions affecting water quality, safety, security, and all other emergency response needs.

Duties Include:

Monitoring of all watershed activities;
Enforcement of City, State and Federal land use and water quality regulations;
Hydrological data and water sample collection;
Security patrols and remote boundary posting;
Security access and control;
Emergency response including Wildland fire suppression and prevention.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience

One year of college education in forestry, law enforcement, natural resources, fire science, or a related field; OR one year full-time experience in a related field and one year of supervisory or lead worker experience

Equivalency

Combination of education, training, and experience which provides and equivalent background to perform the required work will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Though not a requirement, the ideal candidates will have:

College degree (Associate or Bachelors) in a related field, prior law enforcement training, and/or wildfire experience and training (NWCG qualified).

License, Certification, and other Requirements:

Requires a valid Washington State Driver License,
Required to certify and meet National Wildfire Coordinating Group standards for Firefighter 2 at the Arduous Level;
A Pre-Placement Physical will be required for the candidate selected for this position.
Work Environment/Physical Demands

Ability to successfully work alone and in mountainous terrain in all kinds of weather conditions is essential.
Physical training requirements include the national Wildfire Coordinating Group requirements for Firefighter 2 at the Arduous Level (pack test required).
Required to wear a City issued uniform at all times (leather boots are not provided).
Required to work holidays, evenings, and/or weekends, and may require emergency standby.
Required to lift over 50 pounds.
Work requires exposure to people who may become hostile or abusive, such as trespassers and poachers; contact with individuals which may lead to potentially dangerous situations.
Must be able to handle chemicals which may be toxic/hazardous, such as chlorine and glycol (with appropriate protections).
To Apply: Since a seasonal position does not allow the time for completion of all the certifications to be fully qualified as a Watershed Inspector, preference will be given to those candidate who already hold valid certifications in Wildland firefighting, Watercraft Level 2 Inspections, search and rescue, incident command systems (ICS 200 or higher), and security.

National Wildfire Coordinating Group IQS (Incident Qualification System) Printout
Copy of First Aid/CPR Certification card
Wildfire training certifications
Attach a current COMPLETE driving record (not more than 30 days old).
