Position : Highway Maintenance Worker
Job Description : Keene Area Headquarters is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker to operate heavy equipment and power tools (i.e. chainsaws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/attachments) and perform manual labor within Albemarle County.
As a Highway Maintenance Worker, you will:Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditionsPrepare work zones and perform traffic controlDemonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safelyParticipate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projectsComplete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
VDOT is an emergency operations agency thus; this position is responsible for providing guidance and supervision during emergency maintenance operations by ensuring the implementation of emergency plans to include incident management, snow removal and hurricane preparedness. Will oversee, direct and work alongside crews during inclement weather and disaster response after hours on weekends and holidays as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs
Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures
Ability to read & follow oral and written instructions
Demonstrated experience in equipment operation and maintenance comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
Experience in roadway maintenance & construction
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
Valid driver’s license and possession of CDL Class B and DOT medical card, ability to maintain thereafter
Ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
Preferred Qualifications
Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements
Experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation
Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up
High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.

Fingerprint-based criminal history records check required. References, work history, and DMV records will be verified. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, terrain and standing for long periods.
Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense.
This position is essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disasters response, and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential employees are required to report.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
