Here are a few important points about being the hostel host.
This is primarily a housekeeping job, and is the most important aspect of the job and must be done meticulously.
Cleaning rooms and common areas is performed daily between the time of check out, 11am, and check in 4pm.
Summer guests tend to check out earlier, so some days you can start cleaning early and be done by noon, but not always.
Another example would be to clean early, take a break and finish cleaning in the early afternoon. However some guests ask to check in earlier because of a wedding or an event, so it’s always good to get it done asap. Guests are always appreciative when we can accommodate special requests.
Some days will be 4 to 5 hrs of cleaning if we have a full flip, other days there might be no check outs in which case you’ll just be cleaning the shared bathrooms and common areas – This can be done anytime between 11am and 3pm, or earlier if guests have left for the day. Allow 1 hour to clean the common areas.
Laundry can be done anytime as long as you are caught up. The Laundry room must be kept clean and organized.
All trash and recycling from hostel guests must be sorted and put in the appropriate bins located in the outdoor trash shed.
These responsibilities are paid hourly starting at $18 per, but we adjust wages quickly based on good performance.
Caretakers can live rent free in exchange for the guest services associated with the job.

Checking in guests
Airbnb:
Guests who book with Airbnb have instructions on check in and may not require any help at all. This gives flexibility as you may not have to be present. However, if one of these guests needs assistance in any way, they will need to be accommodated, whether simply by communicating (like answering questions), or by being present (getting an extra towel or they may lock themselves out, etc).
Since they booked through Airbnb they have already paid so we don’t have to collect payment on site unless they request other services like adding a guest or bringing a pet.
Guests who book on Airbnb primarily communicate through the app with most questions.
Guests who book ahead not on Airbnb:
Guests will make reservations over the phone or by email. In either case, their credit card information is required to guarantee the booking.
If a guest has booked a reservation over the phone or by email, we have to collect payment manually. For cash payments, change may need to be given, or guests can put exact payments via envelope in the drop box. If the guest is paying with a card, payment is taken by chip using the Square point of sale (POS) on cell phone provided with the job. This is flexible timing wise. It can be done anytime after check in and before they check out. However communicating with the guest about when they can pay is essential. Card payments are subject to a 3.5% surcharge.
Occasionally we send guests invoices to pay online, usually for international guests.
Guests will frequently ask about local attractions, where to go out to eat, and what to do in the area. This is a good opportunity to engage and be helpful to enhance the quality of the stay. Local knowledge is key.

Hostel Main building with 6 bed bunk room and private room for up to 5
Caretaker Lodging
Caretakers have the option to share a bunk in the hostel bunk room, or in the private space of the hostel laundry room, which includes a small kitchen area in the adjacent garage room. The hostel main kitchen is also permitted to use during non guest hours as well as 2 bathrooms with showers.
