Job Description : REPORTS TO: Inupiaq Studies Coordinator
WORK SCHEDULE: 15 weeks (Fall 2022 semester)

COMPENSATION: $35/hour, Non-Exempt, Temporary Part-Time Position
Iḷisaġvik College is rooted in the ancestral homeland of the Iñupiat. The Iñupiaq way of life is woven into our curriculum, programs, activities, and daily interactions within Iḷisaġvik College and our community partners.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Iñupiaq Studies Coordinator, the Language Apprentice will work with a Master Teacher to further their knowledge of the Iñupiaq language.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Meets in person or via Zoom with assigned master teacher for specified hours per week to practice speaking Iñupiaq language.
Sets language goals and assists master teacher in planning language sessions based on personal interests.
Participates in required trainings and Master/Apprentice gatherings. Trainings may include, but are not limited to, Zoom trainings and orientation prior to the start of the semester. The gatherings are meant to be checkpoints throughout the program to monitor progress and address issues as needed.
Completes specified assignments including, but not limited to, a weekly journal.
Upon entering the program, must enroll in and complete the specified IÑU 118 course for language apprentices.
Must be able to commit at least one semester, or the equivalent of 15 weeks, of learning.
Regularly check Iḷisaġvik student email.
Complies with Iḷisaġvik College policies, procedures and administrative directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
Interacts effectively in a multicultural environment.
Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough [NSB] institutions and organizations; Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions.
Ability to interpret and represent NSB community values, customs, and beliefs for the College.
Ability to interpret and represent Iḷisaġvik College values, customs, and beliefs to the community.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [REQUIRED]:

Must be familiar with the Iñupiaq language.
Must be familiar with and/or active in Iñupiaq culture and traditions.

Must have completed one of the following:
Iḷisaġvik College’s Elementary Iñupiaq I and/or Elementary Iñupiaq II courses
Basic Iñupiaq language courses from another institution

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAININGS [PREFERRED]:

Can understand Iñupiaq when spoken, but may have trouble speaking it.
Valid driver’s license.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
