Job Description : Non-Destructive Assay Specialist I

THIS POSITION WILL BE REPRESENTED AS PART OF A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT UNIT.

Position Overview

Under direct supervision, participates in Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) job functions as assigned by management. Typical job responsibilities assist and support qualified NDA personnel in completion and documentation of assigned NDA measurements and data analysis/report generation/report review in accordance with all applicable requirements. The specific work assignment may include duties or activities in one or more of the following functional areas, in addition to other duties as assigned:

Perform analysis of data as necessary to evaluate uranium material in object(s) measured
Analyze test, inspection or statistical data to determine uranium material composition, condition, structure and/or levels as determined by appropriate testing protocol and operational requirements
Document and communicate all measurement analysis results/reviews as required by protocol or procedure and in accordance with managerial direction. Validate /certify testing process and outcomes as required
Monitor and notify management regarding adverse trends in NDA measurement results, QA/QC trends, equipment operation or related factors; comply with all corrective action procedures as appropriate
Provide support to Field Operations for the proper set up, operation and calibration and testing of equipment in accordance with protocol and requirements to support approved methods to acquire the best results
Performs QA/QC test or analysis functions necessary to maintain equipment operability daily or as needed
Provides analysis of instrument QA/QC performance daily and historically
Participates in the determination of corrective actions necessary to maintain instrument operability
Provides timely response to NDA operating schedules
Assist in development of testing protocols, department procedures and other areas as assigned
Perform duties of general/routine complexity in nature
Other job related duties as assigned
Maintains knowledge, attends continuing training, and demonstrates the ability to perform work safely in accordance with all approved safety policies, procedures and applicable regulations and performs assigned duties in a safe manner
Actively participates in Safety Work Groups

Working Conditions

Primarily work in an office with some field work in a D&D environment (outdated and/or abandoned facilities or demolition industrial field environments). Potential exposure to heavy industrial equipment movement, demolition hazards, dangerous chemicals/solvents or hazardous and radioactive materials if proper safety procedures are not followed.

Ability to perform sedentary to light work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally (any exertion of force/lifting greater than 50 pounds requires usage of a two person “buddy system”), non-repetitive, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly, repetitive; performing such activities as lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, walking, grasping, kneeling, stooping, reaching.

Work conditions may require:

Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (the appropriate respiratory protection and other equipment) to enter various types of potentially radiological hazardous areas (such as but not limited to radiological, chemical, dust fumes, mists, heat stress factors, etc.).

Ability to carry several instruments/equipment or tools (up to 50 lbs.) while walking extensively. Potential prolonged walking/standing, repeated pushing/pulling.

Potential for driving of or riding in a motor vehicle, machine operation, and/or working around moving equipment/machinery or motorized vehicles (such as but not limited to car, truck, golf cart, gator, scissor lifts, man-lift, or heavy industrial equipment).

Ability to work in confined areas, tanks, heat stress conditions, high noise areas, and areas with radiation and chemical hazards.

Environmental conditions may include weather or temperature extremes, inclement weather (such as but not limited to wind, rain, excessive heat, excessive cold, snow/ice, etc.)

Ability to perform primary office duties including heavy computer usage.

Radiological training will be required.

Required Skills
Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Knowledge of and experience with NDA measurement equipment, methods, cascade set up and nuclear facility operations

Knowledge of and experience with DOE Safety Basis including technical safety requirements, processes and reporting requirements.

Ability to complete site specific training to gain knowledge of site nuclear facility operations and NDA Qualification Card

Ability to complete site specific and NDA specific training on basic NDA and DOE nuclear facility safety including technical safety requirements, processes and reporting requirements

Attention to detail.

Proficient PC skills including Microsoft software

DOE “L” clearance or ability to obtain a DOE “L” clearance
Required Experience
Minimum Requirements

BA/BS degree with emphasis in Physical Science (or equivalent)
