We are hiring creative, motivated, and talented people with a passion for doing what’s right, what’s smart, and what works.Description/Job SummaryLindahl Reed is hiring Biological Technicians to support the US Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), Fisheries and Ecological Services Division in Region 7, Alaska. These positions support the Service priority of increasing outdoor recreational opportunities by conducting population and habitat assessments that support the preservation of native fish populations. Native fish populations are economically, culturally, and politically important to the residents of Alaska by providing subsistence, recreation, and commercial fishing opportunity. These biological science technicians are needed annually to assist in the sampling of fish populations, capturing and tagging fish, deploying fish tracking equipment, collecting and summarizing data to be used by both State of Alaska and Federal fisheries and land managers to conserve aquatic species, restore and enhance aquatic habitats, manage aquatic invasive species, fulfill tribal trust subsistence responsibilities and mandates, and engage the public and our partners to advance the Service’s conservation mission. Duty stations for these positions are located in the Fairbanks, Kenai, and Anchorage Field Offices; however, assessments will be conducted throughout the state of Alaska.Position ResponsibilitiesLevel I: Assembles basic information on fish populations such as habitat use, sex and age structure, seasonal movement, and harvest characteristics.Assists in capturing and tagging fish.Assists in setting up, dismantling, of field camps and fisheries equipment.Assists biologists as required.Occasionally operates small boats, cars, trucks, or other vehicles not requiring special licenses or certificates.With capabilities, occasionally services or repairs equipment or facilities.Tabulates field data and prepares graphs, tables, and habitat maps.Assists in the development of field reports and guidelines by collecting and compiling specified data.Uses computer to input data or perform basic word processingData presentation and report writing to assist in report preparation.Executes portions of plans or ongoing projects such as conducting a specific portion of a larger study or having responsibility for provisioning a field camp.Uses computer to input data or perform basic word processing.May present and/or prepare environmental educational material of limited difficulty.Level II: Estimates needs for field camp supplies and materials and arranges for camp transport and setup. Ensures that camps are properly maintained and dismantled, and the equipment is accounted for and returned.Responsible for operation of a small field camp for extended time frames or for a larger field camp for several days at a time.Leads small group of technicians in gathering field data and provides necessary training in techniques and procedures. Operates and performs simple set ups and removals of fish weirs and sonars.Makes surveys to collect and analyze various types of information on fish populations such as habitat use, sex and age structure, seasonal movement, and harvest characteristics.Assembles data and evaluates findings.Collects anatomical materials and makes preliminary assessment of such things as habitat preference and population dynamics.Captures fish for study or measurement using nets and electro-fishing.Participates in the development of work plans and schedules.Makes recommendations for improvements in methods and procedures.Prepare drafts for sections of filed reports.Researches and extracts data from publications and manuscripts.Assists in the development of plans and guidelines by collecting and compiling specified data.Executes portions of plans or ongoing projects such as conducting a specific portion of a larger study or having responsibility for provisioning a field camp.Uses a computer to input data or perform basic word processing.May present and /or prepare environmental educational material of limited difficulty.Occasionally operates small boats, cars, trucks, or other vehicles not requiring special licenses or certificates.Within capabilities, occasionally services or repairs equipment or facilities.Qualifications, Skills, and Experience: Ability to operate motor vehicles or other equipment (Must possess and maintain a valid State driver’s license prior to operating Government-owned vehicles).Ability to maintain or prepare biological reports and records.Knowledge and skills of technical methods and procedures to carry out a variety of technical duties common to fisheries biology.Knowledge of the basic principles of fisheries biology and ecology to assess and understand biological information and relate results to a higher objective.Skill in recording, compiling, and arranging data from biological studies.Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills.Well-developed verbal and technical report writing skills.Ability to work in a team–oriented environment.Ability to work with teams made up of government, private, tribal, and other institutions.Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint).Candidate must be a US Citizen or Green Card Holder.Ability to pass a government-administered background investigation in order to be granted access to government IT systems.Level I: Completed 2 years of college courses in biology or natural resources management or a combination of education and specialized work experience in fisheries.Ability to capture, identify, measure or mark fish or wildlife species, collect and preserve analytical samples, and collect other relevant samples and data using a variety of field methods and equipment.Ability to accurately collect and organize fisheries data.Level II: Completed 3 or more years of college courses in biology or natural resources management.Skill in identifying and observing fish in their habitat; ability to think critically and apply sound judgment in adapting standard methods or practices to meet changing situations; and knowledge of procedures, concepts, terminologies, and practices of investigations related to fisheries management and ecology.Substantial technical knowledge of fishery ecology and biology sufficient to understand the purposes and goals of projects, and to actively assist in their accomplishment.Basic knowledge of computer operations to perform limited word processing and/or data entry.Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree with major study in biological science or a similar field of study.Knowledge of firearms and firearm safety in field situations to comply with Regional policy on bear safety.Skill in operation of small boats, cars, trucks, and other vehicles.Knowledge of FWS safety guidelines, familiarity with safety equipment, and current training in first aid (can be obtained while employed).Lindahl Reed is a covered contractor pursuant Executive Order 14042 and the associated guidance; therefore, Covid 19 vaccination is required to be eligible for employment at Lindahl Reed.All positions require a background check after acceptance of our offer.
