The mission, in conjunction with our guiding principles, frames and infuses all aspects of our guest experience. The Director of Exhibits joins Pacific Science Center at an exciting period of renewal firmly focused on the future. The Director leads from a place of cultural competency and collaboration, building and guiding a diverse team of innovative and creative professionals and community members to evaluate, develop and evolve the interactive floor experience. Projects could range from large-scale permanent and temporary new exhibit development, agile (six months or less) current science content development, renovations, and collaborative program development. Future projects will include living exhibits such as the Tropical Butterfly House; the creation of a large-scale Maker & Innovation Lab that is rooted in community access and that highlights local innovation; and a large-scale urban and environmentally focused reimagining of the exterior courtyard area. All of this work will include cultivating partnerships to inform the sustainability and relevance of the interactive exhibit experience; identifying and coordinating funding opportunities; and administrating budgets, grant management, and personnel. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the Director participates in division strategic planning as well as cross-divisional leadership and program initiatives.The successful candidate will demonstrate: Curiosity, agility, and an innovative mindset.Thorough understanding of trends in interactive experience development, relevant integrative technologies, environmentally conscious construction and materials, and general production methods.Experience leading teams in the museum, exhibition, theme park, theater, or other relevant creative experience production industry.Ability to work cross-functionally with internal teams and with external partners in all aspects of exhibit development including design, development, architectural, etc.Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.Ability to use ambiguity as a source of energy, to embrace change, and to lead others through the same.Commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, access, and anti-racism.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesGuides the development and implementation of visionary plans and strategies.Models and promotes collaborative and efficient efforts across internal teams and community stakeholders to establish guest engagement experiences and strategies that ignite curiosity.Evaluates and helps forge new and existing partnerships to inform the development of new experiences. Demonstrates how these partnerships strengthen the case for investment by tracking measurable outcomes.Advocates for team’s needs and expertise. Ensures they have adequate resources required to do their work safely and efficiently and that they feel empowered to be curious and take calculated risks framed by working hypotheses.Hires and supervises staff and external vendors. Supervision will include direct reports and may include dotted line supervision in cross -functional project team development. Monitors team morale to ensure high functionality.Establishes departmental budgets and assists in developing guest attendance goals that meet or exceed plans in service to operating a financially sustainable business.
