Job Description : Editorial Assistant – Dutton & Plume
The Editorial Assistant assists two Executive Editors at the Dutton and Plume imprints. The position offers an exciting opportunity to help produce both fiction and nonfiction titles, with a special focus on upmarket fiction, historical fiction, suspense/thrillers, pop culture, current events, and popular history.
Dutton is a boutique imprint that publishes both fiction and nonfiction bestselling authors including Mark Adams, Drew Barrymore, Sean Carroll, Abi Dare, Fiona Davis, Lisa Gardner, Tami Hoag, Jonathan Karl, Jason Mott, Nick Offerman, Riley Sager, Adriana Trigiani, Jonathan Tropper, Jeff Tweedy, Carl Zimmer, and others. Plume is primarily a nonfiction imprint that focuses on pop culture, cultural and feminist statements, humor, and illustrated books.
The Editorial Assistant will be responsible for daily editorial activities, including reading and providing input on proposals and manuscripts, drafting catalog and flap copy, helping to manage a list of books, participating in the development of new book ideas, and researching sales and competition. In addition to providing administrative support, the assistant will liaise with authors, agents, and different departments across Penguin Random House to support the editorial process and the publishing of Dutton and Plume titles.
Responsibilities:
Coordinates management of the publishing of a list of books from acquisition to publication.
Evaluates submissions and drafts rejections.
Manages communication between authors/agents and the editorial department.
Writes promotional copy for all projects including title information sheets, flap copy, catalog copy, and online descriptive copy.
Provides general administrative support, scheduling meetings, and tracking contracts, payments, etc.
Prepares material for sales, marketing, and art meetings.
Requests author photos, fields questions from authors and agents, and prepares photo insert logs.
Requirements:
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and accurately complete multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
A strong writer with excellent communication skills
Motivated, eager to learn, and resourceful, with the ability to solve problems creatively and proactively
Ability to follow departmental processes and keep track of deadlines
Attentive to current events and popular culture, with a keen eye for/interest in cultural and publishing trends, and an interest in working on nonfiction books related to all above
Interest in working on a variety of fiction including suspense/thrillers and historical fiction
An ability to learn new applications, familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Google Docs a plus
